Breeding Ilyodon Cortesae "freckled Splitfin"

Ok great! Thank you very much!

Congrats on the drop! Nice picture and female X.eiseni!

Also, I have noticed at least one of my female Ilyodon cortesae are gravid! Hopefully, soon I will have a drop!

New update:
I have found 3 females that are gravid and should be dropping in a few weeks!

Thanks! Congrats on your drop! It is difficult to tell sometimes.

Last night I found a fry! Been looking around can't see any more but maybe they are hiding. I have been looking around for the one fry and can't seem to find it but maybe it's hiding as well. I do have a lot of plants in the tank. So, there is some hope. Will keep everyone updated.

I think some species in the Ilyodon family won't eat their own but I am not sure. This is the first Ilyodon I have kept. I am thinking cortesae will. Adult cortesae in small areas (Such as bags or buckets) and groups can kill each other because of the aggression. I am sure they wouldn't hesitate to eat a fry.

I have found the one lost fry along with another fry! Hopefully, more will turn up!

One of my two plump female I. xantusi has given birth to two whopping ~2.5cm monsters in the last 30 hours, my first ever livebearer fry. I left the youngsters free in the tank, they were being left alone during the day, might feel the need to check on them in a mo going on "chrissfishes" last comment. I have got a breeding net, but was under the impression fry were usually safe with Ilyodon parents?

No sign of any more deliveries today, but yeah, I was gobsmacked by the size of these youngsters!

Horrendous quality video, but this is what I took yesterday, shame the bigger Ilyodon got really spooked when I moved the condensation tray just before shooting...

Many of the goodeid group of fish have very large fry compared to typical Poeciliid fry. I was amazed the first time that I saw an Ameca splendens fry drop of a bunch of 1.5 to 2 cm long fry but that seems to be typical of this group.

Congrats on the drops nobody of the goat and biulu! That's great!

Goodeids have very big fry. It's amazing to see the size of the fry and to see how many of the big fry come from one female! I am pretty sure I have heard Ilyodon furcidens leave their fry alone. If this is the case I would assume Ilyodon xantusi is the same way. Ilyodon xantusi is actually a wide mouthed version of furciden if I am not mistaken. However, I shouldn't get much into this because I am not 100% sure and I don't have any experience with the other Ilyodon species and very little with the cortesae. I am just going off of what I have read and heard and more then likely I am wrong.

with all Ilyodon's ) when the adults are kept in Favourable conditions they will usually leave their fry alone. to do well with any of the Ilyodon's they are best kept in a large tank with plenty of swimming space some plants for fry to hide from any aggressive adults, Hungry adults can kill and eat there fry always keep them well fed.

a big fry from one of my Goodea atripinnis this fry was born dead.
brood size was 16 8 survived and are doing well

Still early days, but one of the two fry has not been seen since last night, one was missing for a while yesterday and eventually turned up. If it does not show its face by evening, I'm tempted to place the single youngster in my ~8"x4"x4" hang-on breeding net, for its own protection. Besides the Ilyodon in the 48x12x25, there are various young Synodontis (nigriventris; decora; congica) and a Microsynodontis polli, none of which I would expect to attack a ~2.5cm fry, but this is a mystery that I hope will have a happy ending.

New update:
I now have 3 fry and more should be coming! I have a female dropping right now and two more that should be dropping soon!
