Breeding Fish. What a surprise

Whether you actually want to breed fish or not is completely immaterial....they will just get jiggy with it and reproduce on their own, without any help.....and then people wonder why they end up moving the furniture around to fit yet another aquarium....

Actually, I suppose that if you share space with a reluctant 'Other', inserting ready breeders into a tank could be a good way of 'needing' another tank.

Cories are never reluctant...least not in my aquariums...I need an effective Cory contraception device since the BN missed a few eggs this time around....and I literally have no space to squeeze in a 6th aquarium....unless I put it in the shed outside that has no power supply.....

Whoever invents a Cory contraceptive device would be a billionaire in months

Breeding fish has never been part of my fish keeping plans…what would you do with all the babies..? My lfs store told someone on Sunday that they don’t take livebearers anymore because of “issues”.

I don’t see the point in just breeding readily available fish (guppies etc) and not have a plan for moving them on. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any form of ‘in-person’ club, gathering, competition in my city - so do they even exist any more..?

I don’t have the space or experience to do any “serious” breeding, but I know there are groups of experts/enthusiasts who are trying to keep some species from extinction. Totally different and I would think, on the surface, a very significant task.

My fish breed quite a lot; I just don't post much about it because it's too stinkin' hard to get pictures of those little guys.

I have kind of a love-hate relationship with spawning fish. I love to see them spawn because it usually means they are doing well. I love watching parenting behavior and watching the fishies grow up. But I hate trying to find homes for all the babies. (I live in a town of 7,000 people, few of whom keep fish, and there are only about two months of the year that aren't too cold or too hot to ship) Gets stressful, sometimes.

Did a WC this afternoon and it turns out I’ve more Mosquitofish (HF) than I thought. Problem is I’ve no idea how many I thought I had this morning. Now I’ve even less idea.

To get back on topic most newcomers seem to want a community tank with shrimps n snails etc. Much less chance of breeding than with a species only tank.

Yep that's the main reason I have never bothered keeping any live bearers. They breed too fast and finding a home for them is next to impossible. I would love to keep some Endlers but I just can't be dealing with constantly trying to rehome fry.

No offense was taken.
I was going to remove either the filter box with eggs, or a large number of the other fish, to help the parents manage.
As it is, the eggs appeared to have hatched and 'disappeared'.
I've also got an increasing number of shrimplets that I previously suspected may fall foul of other tank dwellers, but, apparently, that's not to be.
The joys of a community tank.

All of which is quite different from adding a fish,, simply to eat other fish.

And yes...I appreciate it was an off-the cuff, tongue-in-cheek, comedic remark.

(Did you catch that I've got lots of shrimp? )
