So, back in September I bred my first batch of bettas. The mother was an award-winning light orange ST, HM. The father was a Plakat. From my research before the spawn, I knew to expect 100% long-finned fish in the F1. I also expected those fish to be Delta, or SD, or HM. This was based on some of the research I had done. Part of this research was reviewing Jim Sonnier's spawn logs and viewing the results of his spawns .

For example, look at the results of his fish (in terms of tail type) from a plakat father and HM mother: Here

My male from the F1 appears to be a delta, as I expected.

So then last night, I was reading the foruma over at another betta site, and an (assumidly) knowledgable person was asked what one would get if a long finned fish was crossed with a plakat. The person responded, "veiltails".

I've also read that when you cross a delta, SD, or HM with a plakat, you get a percentage of fry that are veil tails, wih the others being Delta, maybe SD or HM.

I'm perplexed. Any input? (obviously I believe my own research about this other forum's one person, but I hope you'll share your experiences with me!)

I was choke and laugh out loud    . What the hack he said veiltail??? Halfmoon with plakat= veiltail? Rediculous and it is nope.
I just got 24 wiggers from a giant male plakat with a red halfmoon female. I will tell you what the answer later with babies proved. LOL :p

That was my response too - then I though, "what if?". Now, I am talking about a male plakat and a longtail (she doesn't have a longtail cause she's a girl, but she was bred from them!) HM female. None of my F1 looked like Veils to me - look Here. So I thought it was kinda weird, and it didn't make much sense to me.

Bump. Just want to make sure I've got it straight.

I think that's absurd. Mixing anything with a plakat pretty much just gives you a perkier finnage.

Yeah, wait'll you find out who it is...
*snicker*
Well, what can I say? I can only assume that she means the spaded point of the plakat caudal will dominate and turn the fish into a VT. That seems really odd to me though. It make me want to go throw a PK and a HM together to see what I get :hyper:

Look at the pics from my F1 (linked on this page) and you will see my results. Then there's Jim's results.

Now, by all means, don't let that stop you! My plakat was a round-tail, so he didn't have the little point. Perhaps you SHOULD start an experiment...

That is so wrong. Plakats will just improve the finnage of your long finned fish. Sorry, but I don't even see where the theory would come from that it would produce veils. Maybe if you bred a VT to a Plakat you would get a perky veil

I;m tracking you down Jen, I wanna know who this was :shifty:

i spawned a plakat and a hm red female in December just coming up to three weeks and some already have colour in the tails and fins thats beat my 4 week ones will get some pictures and i can see some will be nice hm` and no veils.....if there is any vieltails the local lfs will have a field day as must be 100 of them ........but all looking good to me...... :D thats it no never have to use a lfs again if i ever wanted a veil tail all i do is cross a placket with a halfmoon.....

I am 100% with you!! Make it to 201%. LOL  This is how people wants to make the fin stronger standing in the future breeding for long hm. Even halfmoon cross breed plakat like having 4 or 8 rays looks so beautiful in short tail. :D
Below is a halfmoon plakat pair. See how beautiful they are?:)

Thanks guys. I now feel 100% certain that my original research was correct. The person who posted this is either sadly misinformed, or trying to undermine other peoples breeding programs... :shifty:

Wait. My new observation from your sentences.

"So then last night, I was reading the foruma over at another betta site, and an (assumidly) knowledgable person was asked what one would get if a long finned fish was crossed with a plakat. The person responded, "veiltails". "

He mention about a long finned fish and he didn't said halfmoon. I think he is talking about the long finned is a veiltail. Then cross breed with plakat. Uha! Then it will be different out come. :p
