I'm wanting to shift my partner's male Betta (Herbie the lovebug - he was a valentines gift last year) into a tank. He's currently in a large vase. I'm wanting to shift him into a suitable tank that will house him and a small group of neons (and hopefully my partner can stop wanting to put neons in my tank). What size would you suggest? Any other companions you would suggest instead of neons (he's fairly hooked on neons)? I've heard some people have shrimp with them? How do I get hold of them as my LFS doesn't seem to stock them.

Also any particular filter and heater? Please keep in mind I have a limited budget. I'm a little concerned his parents are not going to like a bigger tank :/ They are not animal people.

Neons are likely to nip the fins of the Betta, keep it on its own. Anything larger than 2 gallons, filtered and heated would be fine, shrimp can work it just depends on the temperament of the Betta, people on the forum sell them.

A 25 Watt heater would be fine, and small internal such as a Fluval U1 or a hang on back filter such as an azoo would be fine also.

Thank you :) He'll be gutted he can't have neons lol. Shrimp would be cool though I think, will have to do research. Any particular type I should be looking at?

i have 4 male endlers with my betta and they do fine together, beautiful fish as well. other ppl recommend corys depending on tank size

Just googled them, very pretty and I think he'd like them. Not sure my LFS stocks them but I'll find out on the weekend (2ft needs a larger filter :grr: ). What size tank is that in?

you could also get Cardinal Tetras, they look almost identical to the Neon but are not nippy. (I know because I have 6 with my Betta, and had a different batch with him a couple years back. I've been old they are more fragile than the Neons but I have never had problems, I think they just say that because they don't have as long of a life span. (in the wild they live around a year) I also have albino corys and they are comfortable enough to spawn while the Betta is in there. He's gonna be the boss no matter who you put in there, make sure they are not 'prettier' than him or he may mistake them for another male betta and attack.
Good Luck and congrats on getting him out of that vase :)

I keep a male betta in a 5 gallon tank with cherry shrimp. I find that my betta barely notices their existence. The tank contains bogwood with a good amount of moss attached, as well as a java fern.

goo point! Bettas love their own planted/wooded corner

Thanks guys, this is all great help. I'm sure Herbie will be much happier for it too (I don't like keeping them in vases :/)! I was suggested to have cardinals in my tank instead of neons as my neons are being eaten by basically everything I was told at LFS...#41####. Will get him a tank first (has anyone had any lucky ordering one online?) then talk to him about what to put in there.

What size tank for a group of corys? Would love to palm my little fella off so he could have a group of friends but not sure that'll happen.
