Hi everyone.

I recently bought a lovely new fish for my established tropical tank,

He was listed as a : BOTIA GUILINEN at the shop but wherever I search on the net or in the two tropical fish "Encyclopedias" that I have, I cant find that type \breed!

Does anyone know where I can find info about this guy?

He is an orangey brown colour and likes to hide up in little nooks and crannies, (He was hiding in some rocks with 3 or 4 others in the shop )

Any info would be gratefully received

Thanx
and have a good xmas.

Holly

According to Fishbase there's no species called Botia Guilinen, so that's not helpful. Loaches.com has a 'search by body shape' function here which could be a good place to start.

Yeah, well, nyer... I'm not very good with loach scientific names, they seem to change all the time to vastly complex things....

Maurice Kottelat strikes again! It is largely his work that re-classifies the loach group. Some of it is decidedly dubious I might add. He is a busy chap though and has done vast amounts of very creditable work.

Really once you get past the basic loach species (Clown, Yoyo, Kuhli) thinks start to get more confusing and complex. There's quite a few species that look pretty similar to eachother, and yes...scientific names are changing all the time it seems. But I suppose that's true for all fish species, it's just that loaches aren't as easy to come by as some others.

God Bless,
Joshua
