Boraras Maculatus

Purely out of curiosity, has anyone got a group of these in their planted tanks?

I've been looking for a small school of fish, other than Celesial Pearl Danios, for a 35 litre tank i've got setup. Just curious if anyone has any and can recommend them and are they are as shy as many websites describe?

They are going to 75p or 10 for £7 in my lfs, which makes them pretty cheap.

My primary concern is them predating on my orange shrimp, but i think once i have decent cover they will be ok.

Im also curious about anybody having any personal experiences with them, as I really would like a group of these too, they seem like interesting fish that would look awesome in a planted setup but I don't think that I'll find them around here anytime soon

I have some, they came along with Boraras briggitae and Boraras merah too as they're commonly mixed, but they're pretty outgoing, in my tank anyway, they're with Ember Tetras, Dwarf Gourami's, Panda Corydoras and a Bristlenose pleco and are the most out going fish in the tank, really pretty too.

i have some mosquito rasbora. similar to maculatus i keep them at 27c, peat substrate only a 15ltr long tank full of mosses leaves and wood only had them a cpl of weeks and ther colour is amazing. hoping they will breed in ther. i bought 10 and lost 3 i think they are quite delicate until settled in

Today i added to my already dozen Chilli Rasbora, i bought another 6 from my LFS which, funnily enough, were sharing a tank with loads of Orange Shrimp.
Not sure if it was Chilli Rasbora you were looking at, Tizer, (or indeed if you had thought of), but these litle fellas are slowly becoming my favourite fish in the tank !!!

Do you guys find them extremely active? How many would you recommned for a 35 litre tank, pretty much a cube.

Im going with 10 CPDs in one cube, they are a little more chunky, so do you think i could get away with 15? Bioload really cant be much, just depends how active they are, dont want them battering themselves on the glass. In fact, i think i'll go with 10 anyway, leaves a little room.

cheers for that, i noticed the slightly higher than average temperature requirement but forgot.

Mine became very active after a week or so, they spend the vast majority of their time in and amongst the cover i provide for my Dwarf Gourami though.. fascinating little creatures which show their colour well with oil based flakes. Their bio-load is next to nothing, yet i still have to remember to feed them at a certain part of the tank, otherwise they struggle to eat at all with all the other greedy Tetra in there .
In a 35L..? Depending on what plants and how many you choose to use, i would say 20+ would look fantastic.
Don't expect them to "shoal" alot though, mine tend to stick to groups of 6/7 most of the time.

ive got 13 cpd in a 30 ltr they look cr£$p over a substrate of sand, they lookd alot better over a dark substrate. i kept them with some guppys to begin with. they were very active. once i removed the guppys they became very shy. just my experience. they breed easy

yeah my 10 cpds are on black sand with quite a lot of plants and some cherry shrimp, they look nice at the moment, planning on two 35 litre tanks next to one another so looking at my 10 cpds in one as the main school of fish and i might get these Macalatus tomorrow for the 2nd tank, cant go wrong with 10 for £7 really. Couple of Yellow Honey gouramis to go with them and i think im done.

I reckon my dwarf rasbora have to be the most playful fish I've got. They seem to love bubbles and found a 'water slide' area in the tank where they'd take turns shooting through on the current. My little emerald rasbora in my other tank are a different matter - shy as.

glad you've asked this. I'm after chillis for my upgrade tank, and I never thought about them attacking my shrimp. Glad to hear they're playful I read one site that said they were shy and would stay behind plants all the time.

My chillis aren't shy, though they do have plenty of plant cover, which helps them feel more secure.

I've got some B. maculatus in my 240l. Pretty active and outgoing fish, always roaming around and the males are quite characterful. Also have some B. urophthalmoides in a 25l cube at the moment and they seem a little cramped, going to move them across to the big one.

Cheers Tom, do you think i'll be ok with 10 in the 35l arc tank or am i pushing my luck?

My other option is Microrasbora erythromicron, very similar to my CPDs and just as attractive i think. My only reservation is that they are more than happy to obliterate shrimp so it would have to be a shrimp free tank, which is a shame as i wanted to try a few different shrimp variations.
