Hey all, finally got a piece of bogwood (my first piece ever), it's more for my plecos then for the aquascape of my tank. It's been soaking in a bucket for about 3 days. I was wondering how long it needs to soak before I can put it into my tank without fear of it leaking tarrins (spelling?) and turning the water brown.

it takes ages to get all the tanins out, ive had mine for months and it still produces some tanins

it really depends on the size of the wood i had to soak my largest piece of wood for 6 weeks and replace the water every 3 day with it being boiling water. Remember that some tannin is actually beneficial to the fish.

The piece is 0.81lbs and is about the size of two fists. I've had it soaking for 4 days now so at the end of the week I'll put it in the tank and pray for the best.

Put it in boiling water for a while first, that really pulls out the tanic acid. But as said, it does no harm to the fish in that amount.,

I soak mine in a bucket by pouring boiler water into it and letting it soak until the water cools. If the water is brown at this point, I empty it out and start again. I repeat this until the water stops changing colour. However, you're still likely to get some leaks (as I do) but it's not dangerous and can look quite good. It comes out when you do your water changes anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Getting rid of any bacteria is the most important thing.

I soaked mine in the sink with boiling water over the period of about an hour changing the water every 15 mins or so and put it striaght in the tank and no colour came off it.
