When I was at my lfs I asked about blue acaras and if they can be kept with angels. The guy working there said that blue acaras were aggressive and had similar temperment to the Jack Dempsys. I thought blue acaras were pretty docile cichlids despite their large size but am I wrong or is the guy working there wrong?

Blue acaras are pretty peaceful (for a cichlid :p)

IMO, they still shouldn't be kept with little, fast moving fish as the acara will get annoyed and may injure/eat them just to simplify things.

But they are nowhere as near aggressive as JD's!

That's what I thought. Maybe the guy at the fish store was thinking of green terrors(the "blue acaras" he pointed out to me were more green than blue and had an orange flare on the end of it's tail). Would a blue acara be fine with angels, sevs, firemouths, and an uaru?

I'm not sure about the angels, the heavier guys might be a bit rough with them: not intentionally, but at feeding and play time.

Otherwise that setup sounds good to me.

I'm starting to wish I never got angels because either can"t put them with anything smaller because of the risk of the angels eating it and you cant put them with anything that is more aggressive then them because you run the risk of the angels getting killed!
A blue acare would be cool to have. I'm not sure if I'll get one or not. I know this is horrible :( but I dont really care about the angels considering they are pretty cheap and you can get them at any tropical fish store. I'll keep researching the acaras before I make the decision considering it is quite a gamble.

Well you've got the angels in your tank at the moment: how are they doing? Getting picked on at all?

no not a bit the angels do most of the picking really. The angelfish are more like devilfish because they enjoy chasing the baby firemouths throughout the aquarium

 .... Sorry. :*)

I wouldn't get the Blue acara until you have the 'angels' under control. You could set up an angels only tank, that would look stunning! Then you could add the acara. You shouldn't introduce a new fish while there is aggression in the tank....

I'm going to my LFS in 45 minutes or so, and they have a large Blue acara display tank. I'll ask them about tankmates and check out the tank setup.

could probably work with out the angels

Okay obviously I'm back from the LFS now, and here's my report:

They had a 55 gal with 1 blue acara, seven bloodfin tetras and a sand substrate. Sand, apparently, is best for them as they sometimes dig and hard gravel would hurt if you shoved your face into it.
