black pirhana questions

as he is small I would go with an everyother day approach, as he gets larger you can go as long as 3 or 4 days in between feedings, and at adult size even a week. although it isn't recomended that you make him wait a week for food.

Thanks alot....here's an update. So I was away from the house on friday and my roomates got drunk. They feed Gwar 12 feeder fish and he ate them all in 15 minutes, not eat as whole I mean killed and mulled them. This is a 4 inch piranha. Oh yes and we were told from a professor that our black piranha may be a golden one. So does this sound like something a golden piranha would do ?

from the research that I have done on black pirhanas is that they sometimes don't turn totally jet black, the only real clue that it is a black pirhana is that they have the red eyes. that is what made them so hard to classify. I would wait until your pirhana is an adult

Thanks for the update. I like hearing about it.

If you have a Golden aka. Black Diamond (Serrasalmus spilopleura-spilo for short) it's a good find. They are more rare than rhoms. Personally, I like rhoms the best but this is certainly a nice fish also and if this is what you have, you might even like it better.

They get to about 10" and need at least a 55g with very good filtration. I suggest an Emperor 400 but it's personal preference in what you choose. Beefheartand earthworms could make up most of it's diet. They are tricky predators and will swim around fish not showing any interest and then quickly nip them when the other fish aren't so much on alert.

They need to be kept solitary unless you have a much bigger tank because they are notorious fin nippers. IME, they aren't as aggro as rhoms. It's normal behaviour for him to kill fish or take bites and leave the rest, especially at his size.

smb the behavior you're talking about is quite accurate. I guess I won't know for another couple monthes until it's color gets better.By the way what fish is that by your login ? That has some nasty lookin teeth. Oh yeah I'm building a new aquarium It's gonna be about 60 gallons. Should be done by november. Thanks again

Yea, they are very tricky and it's fun to watch them and try to wonder what they're thinking at the time. Almost comical in a way how they try to act indifferent while lulling the fish to an uneasy comfort level.

The fish in my av is a tigershark. I stole this av a long time ago from someone else so I can't take credit for it.

That's great to hear about your tank! I can't wait to see some pics of it with your P in there.

juanveldez, do a google for Black Piranha, then click on Images in the tabs at the top and you'll see a pretty cool rhom really showing teeth. Nice pic btw.
