Hello everyone, well, I work at a local pet shop, and well we had got a shipment of fish recently, so well we got 2Black Ghost Knifes. Anyways, eventually, no one wanted to buy one because of the ridiculous price of it, so we eventually sold one, but then the other one was there for a week or so, and well I decided to purchase it since one of my tanks at home was empty, so I wanted to give them a try cause they are real cool fish, especially the fact that they are electric fish, and nocturnal/blind somewhat. Anyways, I bought the fish, and well, when I got home, I let him out, and well as I had been watching, what I noticed was that he liked the suckion that the filteration took did, so he liked hanging around the long pipe that sucked the tanks water, and well what I noticed was that, he end of the filter was killing him somewhat, and making him weak, because what it did, was suck up the black that he had alittle, and when he fleed, some parts in his body would look white as if he was in a fight or something, or like if he was dieing, cause he use to get real weak, and the black color that he has tends to faid away, as if he brused himself or something...

Well, I believe im a professional already with fishes, so well, I kinda fixed the problem, and I added a longer tube, so that he didnt get stuck and hurt as much, so the end of the filter is at the bottum, and since the tube i attachted was alittle big bigger, another opening is there at the other end of the entry of the regular tube. So, I added another end to the filter tube, a move thicker end, and this end has more holes, and less harmful.

But anyways, my question to you guys is that, I wanna know how I can prevent this from happening again, especially if in a few more years I transfer him to one of my bigger tanks, with my other filter, im scared the filter sucktion might suck him, and suck away all his black coloration, and eventually, death.

So if you guys have any experience that you can give me, that would be nice, because I dont have any air pumps, I only got filters in all my tanks. So I guess for those people who want to buy one of these fish, I recommend you have a large large tank like a 50, or above, or else, the filter might kill your Black Ghost Knife, and im lucky that my tank is pretty big for its size, I have a 30Gallon Tank, that he is in right now, so throw me advice.

The filter is probably not the culprit, but stress is more likely the problem. BGKs are generally shy and timid fish. They need someplace to hide. If the only thing your fish could find was the filter uptake, that may not be good enough. BGKs especially like caves, so try adding a piece of PVC pipe, or better, something translucent so you can see it, or some other type of cave large enough for him. I'll bet you will see quite an improvement in your fish.

Thanks for some help, and well of course a nice little shielter for him thats dark, so thats actually the first thing I did when I noticed him getting caught the first day, so today, im hoping to get a real replacement for the vacum tube that I use, or the fish bowl im using right now, since I got nothing else. Anyways, thanks for some help, today im planning on getting a permanent decoration with alot of dark space in it, if that doesnt work, then, ill have to find out something else.

Also, can you guys help me out in something else, maybe recommendations on helping the BGK to find its food, because I dont think it would be right to have to hand feed him every time I feed him.

I think knives generally have an excellent sense of smell; mine always seems to know the precise moment when a piece of shrimp enters the water at the top of the tank! In other words, you don't have to hand-feed your fish. It's going to find its food -- if it wants to eat it -- one way or another. They are easily stressed, though, and I really think you should give it a "cave" home.

BGKS are so fun! Hehehe.. I used to hand feed mine freeze dried bloodworms. But the posts above are correct, they have an excellent sense of smell. I had mine eating fish flakes, brine shrimp, and live bloodworms and never really had a problem with them finding their food.

Yeah they need alot of places to hide since there nocturnal. I have two big pirate ships and that suits my BGK find. You also have to keep the water very clean. This fish is scaless makin it more subseptible of catching diseases.
