OK I know its a bit late asking now I have the thing but I juist want to confirm a couple of things ...

I intend to run the Eheim in conjunction with a standard undergravel filter, the idea is let the gravel take out all the larger particulate and crud and then use a gravel cleaner once a month or so to hoover it out and to use the Eheim as a bio filter, it was supplied with Eheim substrate. I did much research to arrive at this particular filter but there are still the odd one or two who seem to have problems with them, especially the wet / dry function and after reading the last couple I am concerned that I may have made a poor choice - I know should have asked before acting.

My questions are :-

1 : Would you guys just set the 2227 up as per Eheims notes, plug it in and forget the thing or would you get one of these bacterial improvers / starters such as Interpet filter start.

2 : Is there anyone here with any gotcha's for these filters that I should avoid ?

I would avoid the filter full stop. I had one for a few months and could never get the damn thing set up. Outside of a lab it is bloody hard. All pipes need to be identical lengths and the filter has to be at a set height etc.

Even the South East Region Rep for Eheim couldn't set it up right for an LFS I go to.
