Bio-spira

so if I get bio spira, I can't add any fish until i;m done with it?

EDIT: If I OD, since i have a 29g, will it cause harm, or does that mean that it's impossible to OD? I never really understood it.

I've never used it but we sell it at the LFS I work at.  My boss, the person who orders the stuff in, knows his fish stuff.  He says it works.  Another fish guy at my work also recommended I use the stuff when we were having some trouble with one of the marine tanks at work.  So that's two votes for it, from guys who have been keeping fish a long time and really know their stuff.

how much is a 3oz bottle of it at your fish store?

EDIT: How many times do you treat the water with this, and if I have a 29g, would it hurt to add the whole bottle/bag that treats 30gs?

With bio spira, you add the bio spira and the fish at the same time. As I said, I've never used it before but from what I've read it works as long as it has been properly refrigerated and isn't old or out of date. You dose it twice. Once at start up and again 7 days later (I think). I don't think you can overdose but I'm sure the directions are on the bottle/pack.

that's going to be hard not to do (ODing). 29gs and a single oz calls for 30gs. Why do they have to make things so difficult for us?

You can't OD with bacteria. Just think of it as having a fully cycled 29 gallon tank ready for a full load of fish. The bacteria are there to handle 10-20 fish but you only add one small fish. He won't be harmed by the extra bacteria. They would just die off because he didn't create enough waste for them to consume. The reason they sell it for small (30 gallon or less) and large (up to 90 gallon I believe) is so you can cycle whatever size tank you have at a more economical price than buying several packs for a small tank.

okay so when they say "you can not od bio spira" they mean that it's impossible, have I got it right now?

Adding the whole 1 fl oz bottle to my 29 won't cause a problem then?

It probably won't cause harm, but it is a waste because the bacteria will just die because there is not enough ammonia for it to live.

thanks! That is all I wanted to know. I've got to go pick out quite a few more fish before I get that stuff though, b/c I don't have many fish in there now! :) Thank you all!

I just cycled a 10 gal with Bio Spira and I am not having as good of results. I put in 2 Corys and 3 Betta Females. Two days after adding the fish my nitrite levels have spiked to .50. All other levels are good. My Bettas are showing signs of stress and I am going to have to take them out to let the tank cycle more.....

sandig, did you add the biospira and the fish at the same time? Also, where did you buy the bio spira? Do you know for sure that it had been refrigerated properly until you bought it?
