hi guys

was just wondering, large snail shells you see used for decorative use such as in bathrooms etc, where do they come from? some of them are huge and very colourful and you dont see any in the hobby? some are the size of small footballs! there are also lots of smaller ones which are very colourful, any information on why none of these creatures are available for sale would be of great interest!

thanks in advance, summat fishy :)

Is this what you are referring to? http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=conch&...sa=N&tab=wi

They are called Conch's. I dont know anything about them, however my LFS has some, and they are as cheap as £4.99 for a small one :)

They are like a snail, look out for the little boggley eye that comes out. I dont have one, but I am just looking for one with an interesting shell then I will.

Hope that helps!

Alex

thanks alex their the ones! :)

its just their absolutley huge and ive never seen them with anything living in them and there is so many different kinds! where are you based dude uk or the states?

Im from the UK dude, down by Portsmouth.

When I was in the Maldives, my first time snorkelling actually in September, I went down to pick some of these huge shells up, I thought hermit crabs lived in them! I pooped my pants when a long leg/claw looking thing came out and put them down. But after some reading they are actually more like snails.

They need an abundance of algea, and you can get smaller conch's around a few inches online. I did a search yesterday and loads of shops can mail order them to your door! Some grow much slower and smaller than others.

You gonna get one? :p

well hair algae is a bit of a problem so foods not a problem and if i can get a small one, i might just do that :D thanks for the info dude i bet its ace down portsmouth near the sea? you should set up a cold water marine and get stuff from rockpools! :D

Man, our sea is rough and black looking. The rockpools are more over in Cornwall and places, where there is sand too!! Is lancs inland im guessing then?

I kitesurf down here though, so its not all bad :)

Hi all, seems like a good time to introduce myself.
Also portsmouth guy here (small world eh).
Sitting on the sideline at the moment on when to get marine tank, likely to be the orca 550, really looking forward
to it just still planning it all out and obviously waiting for xmas to get out the way so bank account can recover 1st.

3 years ago had honeymoon in the bahamas, came across conch back then huge great things, although have to admit
on a powerboat day out stopped on island and had conch soup for lunch  although tasted so good do feel bit guilty now i want to get in to marine tanks (pretty sure im not meant to eat my live stock  )

Take care all, and hope to be asking oh so many questions soon
