Big Fish For a 55 Gallon

Now back to my question. Is there anything else that can be by itself in a 55 gallon?

Any fish deserves the room to move freely without bumping its nose every time it wants to change direction, the ideal formula for tanks size to fish size ratio is 4x the length of the fish long by 1.5x the length of the fish wide (deep) by 1.5x times the length of the fish tall, giving a tank that is 56x21x21" needed to comfortably house oscars based on a 14" adult size. Of course tanks this size are not available off the shelf so you round up or down to the nearest size available, in this case either a 48x24x24" (120g) or a 60x24x24" (150g). Either of those tanks could hold two oscars and some hardy tankmates.
No large CA or SA Cichlid should be kept in a tank of less than 75 gallons.

I always fancied keeping on of the more colourful Snakeheads (Channa) but I think it's against the law in the States.

I've got a FLowerhorn that would like to live in your 55 all alone since he will kill anything else in the tank with him. I put a pleco in there just to clean up a little and in one hour I had to pull it back out because the FH was biting its fins and would not leave it alone if it came ANYWHERE near the caves. I think it will always be a solitary fish.

If you were a bit closer to Ohio I would make you a great deal.

Check them out...

dont be sorry, its debates like this which make the forum interesting. Its only when some individuals take things too far and start to be rude and nasty that things go wrong. :)

well, i dont think looking for a fish that will eat other fish is a good way to look for a fish. feeder goldfish arent healthy. imo feeding fish other fish just to see them run for their lives isnt right. if you really want to feed them live fish, buy some guppies and breed them yourself, these will be much healthier than feeder goldfish. bichirs will eat anything that will fit in their mouths. im going to set up a 55 gallon with a senegal bichir, african brown knife, and an african butterflyfish in it. all these fish are predatory. if you want a bichir to go in a tank by itself, i think an ornate bichir would be good, im not sure about this though.

Edit: from what ive heard from other people, ornates are really lazy and dont do much. if you do some research, you will find a bichir that you like

Ive seen logs that have more life than ornate bichirs

I was just using golfish as an example. I refuse to feed anything goldfish or guppies.

Cichlids that reach a range of about 8-10" are all worth considering - Texas, Green Terror, Jack Dempsey... those types.
