Hey guys. My two bettas have spawned, and I have already removed the female. I now see the male taking care of his little eggs. :fun: So, my question is, when do I remove the male? When the fry are free-swimming? Also, when do I remove the bubble nest? (Or the piece of styrofoam that the bubble nest was made inside?)

Also, what should I feed the fry? I realize now that I don't have enough time to start an infusoria culture. :/ Could I use newly hatched BBS? Or some liquid fry food? I have raised a couple batches of zebra danios on that liquid fry food.....?

Thanks in advance!

You should researched all this before you bred them. I specifically wrote lots of paragraphs for you to read and prepare yourself.

All the prep. is done before spawning them not after.

BBS is fine, but you will need some sort of worm culture first though. Liquid Fry foods, produce Infusoria.

I'm sorry. I am quite bad for that. :/ You are making me feel bad. I do some research, then I get impatient, and do stuff when I'm not supposed to. Oops. :-(

If I said what was on my mind I would probably be banned!

I wish there was some sort of test to keep irresponsible idiots from keeping fish!!!

if you are completely unprepared in the way of micro worm cultures, you CAN use pellets that are absolutely pulverized into a powder. just dont overdo it. a very very small amount at feeding time will suffice. alternately, you CAN use flake that you pulverize into powder. same with the powdered pellets-dont overdo it with the food. literally a tiiiiny amount/feeding. remember to do frequent waterchanges. twice a day if able. once a day for certain.
cheers

I think fry_forever! has got the point. No more insults are necessary. Now let's concentrate on giving her the help she needs to get some fry raised successfully.

Will Hikari First Bites be OK for them?

Thank you to the people who responded respectfully. :) I have Hikari First Bites, as well as BBS. I read that you aren't supposed to do water changes until the fry are a little older? Should I still be doing water changes when they first become free-swimming?

You want honesty?? Honestly you ain't prepaired for it so.... just let the male eat the fry simple solution(They need live food, that doesn't mean flake food that means alive if you don't have that no point in going on). Not being harsh here but this is probably the best solution let the first batch go..... just let it go, focus on the next batch then you will be prepaired 1-2 weeks to breed again...

Even the best would fail that test! Meaning non idiots

while live food is optimal for growth and development (=faster growth) you can raise them successfully with pulverized flake/pellets.
there was a member on here a few months ago (sorry cant recall which) who had a journal of her/his betta spawn raised entirely on flake until big enough to take brine shrimp/bloodworms.
it can be done. not optimal as probably have more deaths and far less growth initially. i wouldnt give up on the fry. do your best with what you have on hand. and NO more breeding until you are prepared. its just not really fair to the fry.
cheers

I will try my best at not sounding insulting or anything, but what on earth were you thinking? Bettas are one of the most difficult fish to spawn, and you have just gone and breed your bettas with no preparation whatsoever.

I have read both your threads, and find it really funny, that your asking now.
Perhaps you should have waited and done your research before asking now.

I have to say theshadowinc is saying right, let the male Betta fish eat the fry, and next time research.

Ahem...... I think I've already commented on members who seem set on making negative remarks on this thread. If I have to respond to this again I will be doing so prepared to hand out a stretch on mod's preview to the offenders.

As in most other fishy matters, experience is by far the best teacher. While fry_forever! may or may not succeed in raising any of this batch of fry to adulthood, by observing them she will learn much. Once again I will ask you all to provide whatever assistance you can.

Edited my post

FF - be sure you have a LFS lined up to take the babies! Call around.

Hi Fry_forever

There is a member I know has raised her fry on flake food alone and they grew quickly.

I was reading her diary on another site, don't know if it is here, but her name is pipoodle - have a search.

It is do-able - and good luck :D

Thanks again to the folks who are really trying to help. I had made mistakes in the past with other types of fry as well, but still managed to raise many batches to adulthood. And I did do research, I got help from a betta breeder at my LFS, who is in fact willing to take the fry if I raise enough to need to give them away.

And I WAS prepared, it just took me longer than it should of to start an infusoria culture. I have BBS eggs going now, I also have liquid fry food and Hikari first bites. I'm also culturing infusoria, it should be ready in less than a week. (Almost perfect for when the fry become free-swimming)

So should I start doing water changes as soon as the fry are free-swimming?

Thanks in advance! :good:
