Bettas Spawned, Now What?

Congratulation's.....I have managed to raise channa ornatipinnis from mistakes...i got these as a trade from a friend for my jaguar cichlid,i read up on them and asked all the questions, and guess what they had never been bred in captivity,so obviously i thought that would never happen,WRONG...so i got a culture of micro worms from a mate at lfs and got that going and went on ebay and found deshelled brine shrimp eggs<which you just feed striaght to them from the bag, which now my friend uses for his betta fry aswell :good: you will learn and its a good learning curve sometimes,

Thank you very much, Nelly. :) Should I clean the tank daily when they become free-swimming?

no - try not to overfeed

cleaning the tank can be difficult whilst theyre small - you could have ph shock, temperature shock, and suck babies up!

Any dead bodies extra food suck up with a turkey baster :good:

p.s. Not everyone gets everything right first time - making a mistake on timing of food is not the end of the world - and as I said before - they CAN be raised on dried food - with good results too

Thank you for the understanding and help. :good:

Will BBS fit in their mouths at such a small size? Because I can have those hatched by tomorrow. I already have a batch going.

I think newly hatched will - or de-shelled is it?
Okay, thank you. :) The fry have hatched, and are now wigglers.

I have the filter off - is it okay to have it off for that long? Wouldn't it kill the beneficial bacteria?

Hi fry forever,

Well first congrats, second your in for a big learning curve. Trust me, I had reserched before hand, but not nearly enough, I have been very lucky that my spawn ended up very small and a lot easier to raise.

Anyhows,

Have you looked on e-bay for a microworm culture? You can get them for under £2 delivered. They are very easy to grow and are great live food. Your BBS will be perfect to start them off with.

If it is a mature tank that you have then you may have microscopic organisims(sp)in the tank that will help feed your fry.

What filter do you have in the tank? You need a sponge filter, if you haven't already got one.

Hello, and thank you. :)

Yes, it is a mature tank. It has been set up for... two or so years. :/ And yes. It is a sponge filter. I turned it off, because the fry were getting slightly pulled around by the gentle current. When should I turn it back on?

And looking closely into the tank, I saw a ton of tiny, tiny cyclops. (Or something of the sorts - it was a tiny object, smaller than a newborn brine shrimp, and it was vibrating slightly) So they should have SOME food if worse gets to absolutely worse. (Which I highly doubt will happen)

And it's a pretty decent sized spawn for the first time..... I counted 50 or so fry.

Thanks for all the help. :)
