This is not a flame aimed at FreshMike. In fact it's not a flame at all, but a carefully considered argument.
FreshMike cares about his fish and may not keep his Bettas in mayo jars all the time, We'll have to wait and see what he says, but there's plenty who do keep them like this. And worse.
Just because this is how they've always been kept, and just because they can be kept like this, doesn't mean that they should be kept like this.
Is this an acceptable way to keep hamsters?
Of course not. So why do so many people see it as acceptable to keep a fish like that?
And the "but wild bettas live in puddles and so prefer confined spaces" argument just doesn't wash.
Hamsters live in confined spaces in burrows, yet we do not keep them in jars.
