Bettas In Cups?!

Hey,

Since ive been using these forums ive read a number of posts about bettas being kept in cups! Im confused. Do you mean the tiny plastic cups?! Because i dont see how anything, let alone a fish could live in that!!! Im from England and we dont have shops like Petco and Walmart here, which, from what some of you have said, is a good thing!! But, ive got to say the pet shops i have been into keep bettas in a pretty good environment. Even 'Pets at home' (Kinda like Petco and Petsmart i think) have them in usually an 8 gal at least, with other fish, filters, heat and they all look healthy!!! They even give advice when you buy fish which is actually quite good and when i did ask about their bettas i was told they wont sell them unless you have an adequate home for them :)
I may just have a particularly good local Pets at Home, i dont know... please, correct me if im wrong about that! :)

I dont know if im just misunderstanding everyone, but from what i have got from your posts, the ways in which bettas are kept in America (and anywhere else?) are sickening!! Is there not something that can be done about that?!? I think if i saw one in a tiny cup id buy it out of sympathy, which is probably the worst thing to do!!!

Anyway, if anyone can clear that up for me id be grateful... im very confused!lol

at most big name pet stores, they keep the bettas in shelves away from the other fish in small bowls or bags, sometimes cups
i think they do that because it's cost effective, easy to sell, and easy to set up
but it's in no way right

unfournately the bettas that are sold here are kept in very very tiny cups with hardly enough water and not enough room to even turn in! its terrible, but reality :( i'm in canada and it happens here too (but we have a petco, we have a petsmart and walmart). It just more "pratical" to keep them that way rather than have nice large tanks for them :(

england sounds like a nice place for bettas! but i dotn' think fish is considered as an animal here so it's not possible to report them to the humaen society or anything like that...it's just a fish to them, nboody really cares

:( I want to come to America and buy all those poor little bettas now!!! I couldn't imagine my little Arnie in a cup, or a bag!!! I got him from a really nice fish store and he had his own 20 gal just with a load of plants!!!

I LOVE America and i so want to live there in the future but i dont think id be able to go into the pet stores!!! I get so upset/angry/confused when i see any animal kept in conditions is obviously not designed for!!!

bettas are beautiful!! How can you even see them in a cup!??!?! Put them in a nice big tank and you can see all their beautiful fins and colours!! Thats how they're meant to be kept in captivity.... in my opinion.. Stupid Pet Store People!!!

I think there are regulation in England in regards to how all animals, including fish are kept by the way! Thats a good thing :)

not all stores are that way but most. I see seceral stores that put the bettas in the 10 gallon tanks with peaceful fish. I also do gotta give some props to wal mart they do have the biggest cups I have seen of any of the stores. I have seen a few that actually take care of them. SO all is not bad, it could be better , but it isnt all bad.

Yeah, they keep them in cups here. Napoleon was in a cup just as big as he was. Mason was in a SEALED jar with no air. He was very very lucky to be alive right now. Mason was blatantly abused. He was so happy to be out of that he literally crawls into my hand now and cuddles with my hand.

And you think I'm kidding. I'm not. He was so badly treated that he views me as his little goddess

(Hes a little miffed at me right now though, just did a water change.)

Napoleon was abused, but not so bad.. he is just a bit people shy at the moment, because of the way he was bagged and handled. But hes quickly demonstrating he will do anything he can to be a good boy.

By Flaring. Lots and lots and lots of flaring. :hyper:

Right now, Steel is in a petstore cup. Yes, hes having a waterchange, and yes, its temporary. For up to an hour or two, its fine.. (as his tank needs to clear out before it is considered habitable...)

Anyway, yes, they mean very tiny cups.

rollntider - it sounds like some of them are getting better then? :) thats good!! A lot of shops over here keep them with other peaceful fish and they seem fine like that :)

BeccaBlain - I think i have seen a picture of Mason, did you post it a couple of days ago?! If it was him he is beautiful! :) And from what you said, he is indeed lucky to be alive!!! Im sure its fine for them to be in a cup for a couple of hours! Over here you take them home in bag, i dont know if its the same in America.. But i think a fish could be in one of those bags quite happily for a couple of hours, but no longer. I dont know how they live in those cups!! It must be awful for them :(

At least yours are obviously being well cared for, if a little pampered? ;) lol As they should be of course! :D

well walmart does have bigger "cups" and you have to remeber that these bettas get sold very quickly, and arent in these cups forever.

I know that my walmart sells out very quickly. once went and there were 50 bettas, go back to the fish section 1 hour latter and one left.

oh... Poor bettas :(

Just out of curiousity, anyone reading this that breeds bettas, who do you sell them to? Pet shops? Other breeders? private sales as pets? I know a lot of people spend a lot of time and money breeding their bettas, i cant imagine anyone wanting them to end up in a little plastic cup...

I think if i bred mine id want them to be pets! :D They tend to be spoiled if they're kept as pets! :) lol
