Hi All- I wanted to put a red betta in a planted community tank. Nothing else is in there yet. What other kind of fish can I put with a betta in a 10 gallon tank?!?!?! I was thinking about 3 clown loaches and a school of danios or tetras of some sort. Will this work?

Thanks! :fun:

you'll be fine! Just incase tho make sure there are some hiding places for the little fish. i know you'll be okay, because i have all the fish you mentioned!!
My betta is red aswell! Good luck with the new fish ne way!

Clown loaches are peaceful and would get along with the betta, but clown loaches grow up to 12". :hyper:
They might be small now, but you definitely want to have a 75 gallon tank for them to move into.
Maybe you would consider some corys and danios with the betta, that way you have activity at all levels of the tank.

Hi-

I was debating between clowns and cory's. I figured though that since it was going to be a planted tank that clowns would be better since they are known to eat snails. I have 3 clowns right now in my 30 gallon, which will be moving along with my other fish in April to a new 55 gallon. I guess I could always get clowns for now, and when they get bigger (which would be in a awhile as they grow slow) I could transfer them to my 55. Does anybody know what else could be used to rid snails, that would live peacefully in a 10 gallon with a betta and either danios or tetras?

Not sure. However, if you wash your plants and/or disinfect tehm before adding them to your tank, you won't have to worry about snails.

I'm not sure about the tetras and danios in the ten. They need lots of room to swim in and they are fin nippers. They'll tear up your bettas fins, unless your male decides to beat them up (happened at Petsmart, wonder which betta I got :D ).

I'd suggest cories, because I have some experience with them, and livebearers. The male might try to mate with guppies, though, so you might want to get another type of livebearer if you choose to do so.

My Zebra Danios get along just fine with my male B in a 10 gallon...no fin nipping what-so-ever. I guess it depends on the fish.

I have my betta in a community 10 gallon, and he did great, until he started suffering from dropsy :-( but he was in the tank listed in my specs, and never had a fight.

I don't know if you were gonna try them or not but avoid putting gouramis in, because they i heard they might fight :grr: with bettas or vice versa. If they were in a thirty or something they would be o.k. 8) :flex:  :hey:

Clown loaches can get up to 12" in the wild, but they have only been reported to be up to 6"-8" in captivity. I think it's due to their very slow growth. They seem to sprout when they are babies, until they reach up to about 3", from that point on, they seem to grow very slow. Clown loaches would be the best to rid snails. You can use other loaches, but they tend to be fin nippers. Also, puffers wil too, since they have sharp teeth to break through the shells, but will also be aggressive. I believe they also prefer a higher amount of salt in the water, almost brackish.

Unfortunately, in a 10 gallon tank, you could run into being overstocked very quickly. The normaly guide is 1" for each 1 gallon, which applies to fish under 3". Fish larger than that, though unwritten but slowly being followed, should follow the Marine guidelines of 1" of fish for each 5 gallons of water.

what i suggest is

ur planted tank with the red betta and 3-4 cories

clown loaches will get tooo big and the danios will fin nip the betta
but perhaps u can add another bottom feeder which is the Oto

I think every tank should have a pleco
(and yes I know how big they get, but I had one for years that never got bigger than 3-4 inches)

yeah mine are fine too. never seen either the betta going for the danios or the other way round. i suppose putting a gourami in with it would be silly but, you know, that why i went and did just that, i havent had any problems...

Hi Everyone- thanks for all the great suggestions! I think I'm going to go with the red betta, definately some cories, and will take it from there. I always have the option though that if there are fights or if one grows to big, I can move them to my 55 gallon that i will getting within the next month.

If i did decide on the danios the corys and the betta, how many of each would you suggest. (meaning corys and danios, obviously only one betta!) I know they are both schooling fish but i don't want to cramp them!

Thanks again! ;)
