Betta Obsession.

Sorry.....I know absolutely nothing about guppies

I know a few people in the betta section keep and breed them. I think Tibby is one of them so she'd be able to help :good:

You could always start a seperate thread in the common livebearers section on this site, there are lots of people that will have all the answers to your questions and more!! :good:

i used to breed guppies, mollies, platies, and swordtails, i know a little about them....

i no longer have any...had to make room for bettas!

well i'd like to breed bettas...it would be nice to have extra cash and beautiful bettas since im a poor college student

The only thing that keeps me from getting a ton of bettas is the water changes. And the setting up of new tanks haha. I dont like it. I have another 3 gal so I will be getting one more betta. I'm going to stop at 2 though

alright..just gotback from walmart..i fought off the urge once more! mostly cause they all looked bad except this one VT that was a mustard color..i must admit, i am a sucker for any betta with mustard in it, especially CT's...

did however, pick up some stress zyme..because ive been having nitrite problems lately.

once my boyfriend gets an apartment i forsee this problem growing ugly..i'll have a tank in every room!!!
 try buying a HOUSE and being the owner/fish nut yourself. I need to quit being a college student at this rate. And to think I was trying to get my gf into fish last year by buying HER a tank..... It's a disaster... but one I enjoy every day :D

There is info on our website on breeding (just click on my siggie).

Be warned though. You do need alot of space and the equipment to house and heat lots and lots and lots of babies. Minimum 10 gal spawning tank plus bigger grow out tanks. You also need to have cultures of live food for the babies.

It is a lot of work but very rewarding if you're prepared to spend every day feeding and doing water changes on all of them.
Betta breeding is no joke. At all... Seriously. Read Read Read, and then consult every experienced breeder you have access to. Just be as prepared as possible.

i see...well do you know anything about guppies?
mine are coming up on 5 weeks and im not sure how big they should be by now. I've seperated the males and females from what i could tell (gravid spots) and the males seem to be getting color...they are all doing fine in my main tank but i just dont know how long it will be til they are full grown
Guppies: Add male, add a female..... watch babies grow... sell when they are large enough. Guppies will reproduce and grow in pretty bad conditions. I wouldn't worry if I were you. You can do some research on this site via the search function tho ;)

Of course there is a lot more involved when breeding rare strains of tails in guppies (much like 'exotic' strains of bettas), but the principle is much or less the same.

You won't make money breeding bettas out of a dorm. You will spend a LOT of time and effort... as well as money. No profitable solution without being a breeder with a lot of resources, knowledge, and realistic marketing ability.

Just be reasonable. The fact is you probably should not have any more bettas in your situation. Solution = Dont buy more. Easier said than done.... but take a few days to step back and think about it before getting too excited.

.... If you have nitrite problems, stress zyme will do nothing. If your tanks are small and unfiltered you should be changing the water almost daily. If the tanks are filtered and show nitrite, they have not cycled. This is very detrimental to fish. It's entirely too late for me to still be awake and I cannot dive into the cycling process. If someone would track down a good link and post it up, that would be awesome. :/

Keep us posted Petitelupin

Im also not sure its really a business - first time round prob definately not ! food tanks extra heat mats extra tubs that kind of thing is expensive ! also if your stuck for room already where are you going to put the whole seperate tank you will need for a grow out which will be 12 gals plus ideally (this is a completely different tank to the parents tank) You would also need a large jar with air stone and heater if you wanted to culture brine shrimp for the fry. Decapsulated brine shrimp eggs cost 5 pounds a bottle.

Also if your at college are you there permanently if you go home in the holidays its not the best plan - my betta babies were born early january and a couple of weeks ago my landlord told me I had to move into temp accommodation because my bedroom had structural problems in the ceiling - so I had to move 26 babies roughly 3 adults all in individual bags and jars in my car! it was a nightmare!

Netty's website tells you all you need to know but these are things to consider, if you choose to breed do a lot of reading and research and give it a few months before you decide, then everyone here is happy to help

Money :hyper: I wish  Honestly any money we have made has gone straight back into the fish and the postage we make a loss on!!!!!

I think you may have quoted me on mistake :)

my tank is cycled...i think the bacteria may have just crashed though because about 2 weeks ago my readings were fine. right now ive got ammonia 0, nitrite 3, nitrate 30...
ive been doing water changes regularly, bought an extra foam piece to shove in my filter, and do gravel vacs too!
i just dont get why the nitrite isnt going away. no problems in any of the fish though

How old is your test kit? Sometimes an older test kit can give false readings, IME.

says its good til 2012...im just using test strips right now until i can get API freshwater master kit...again..me = poor college student.

i found it online somewhere for 15$ which is like half the price of petsmart.

OK - it was just an idea I thought I would throw out there.

Sounds like you are aware that the strips are not as accurate as the liquid tests.

One more suggestion - maybe take a sample of your water to your LFS and have them test it & explain what is going on with your tank. Maybe you are worrying for nothing (best case scenario) or, if not, they can offer you suggestions.

HTH & best of luck!
