Hey guys, recently I moved my Betta and my Bronze Cory from a 8g tank to a 29g tank. I had the filter media from the newer filter (800L/H that i'd be using in my 29g) put in my old tank so it'd grow some bacteria and make the cycle process easier. I now have 3 filters set up in the tank, one corner and two internals (the 800L/H with an air bar and a 260L/H with it's flow turned all the way down)

However since moving the fish in, I've noticed my Betta isn't as active anymore. Before it used to poke around at the surface when it saw movement outside the tank thinking it was food, but in the new tank he just sits in a corner not doing much. He doesn't seem to be eating much either.
I've had both fish for about 4 months now, originally I had an albino corydora but it died due to fin rot/red spots, I moved that fish to a hospital tank but not straight away.. My current corydora seems fine and is loving the new sand substrate.

The water temperature is about 28 degrees C although im not sure how accurate this reading is. The water does feel kind of cold. My water levels are 0 nitrites, 0 ammonia and the nitrates are around 40. This is because of my naturally high tap nitrate levels but I have several plants in my tank along with duckweed on the surface to help lower it.

Hopefully someone knows what's causing my Betta to act so unusually.

Thank you for your time!

Do you mean you have a thermometer that's reading 28[sup]o[/sup]C or is that what the heater is set to?
If it's the heater setting, they are known to be inaccurate, you need to adjust them to whatever setting gives the temp you want.
If the 28[sup]o[/sup]C is a thermometer reading, what kind of themometer? The ones you stick on the outside of the tank are inaccurate as they are affected by the air temp.

The reason I'm asking is because bettas do get sluggish if they are too cold, but most cories are quite happy at lower temps. Bronze cories prefered temp range goes as low as 20[sup]o[/sup]C

Oh the heater was set to about 25 degrees but the thermometer read 28, it's one of those ones you stick a metal end in and it gives you a digital reading, although It might not be that accurate because it's a fridge one. I'll try raising the temperature on my heater!

(What is the ideal temperature for a betta?)

I keep mine at 25 to 26[sup]o[/sup]C.

Do you have any other thermometer you could test the tank with? Even one that hangs on the wall, so long as you give it a good wash in plain water first

Hm, could it be that my tank is bigger so I'd need to crank the temperature up a bit more? I've raised it to about 26-27 and we'll see how that goes. Unfortunately the only one i have is the sticker ones on the side of my old tankt hat i cant take off :/ might go and buy a new one.

If you buy a new one, get one that sticks to the inside of the tank with a sucker, a glass one with a red liquid inside. They aren't very expensive and are more accurate than the kind that sticks on the outside.

Like one of these right? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Spirit-Glass-Fish-Thermometer-Sucker/dp/B0058CWIXC/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1355071864&sr=8-5

Check your temp first. But he could just be scared in such a big tank. He went from an 8 gallon to a 29 gallon. That's like going from a studio apartment to a mansion. He might just not know what to do. Especially of there are only 2 fish in that tank. Do you plan on adding some more cory cats?

Yeah I definetely plan on adding more corys. Things have gotten a bit worse since I last posted and my Betta is having a lot of difficulty staying upright in the water, he kinda just ends up upside down and laying sideways on the ground ;/ I think it's swim bladder related and so I've ordered some medicine, he also kind of looks like he has cloudy eyes too and a big belly?

I'm sorry to hear that :-( do a water change and add the Corys. Then you can get another betta in a week or 2.
