do bettas have to be kept in air circulated tanks or can they be kept in bowls like they come in (only - of course - larger)? i can't get anymore tanks but i figured maybe a bowl with a betta, some gravel and a few plants may pass as an okay : :D

there is a difference of opinion on housing. I have bettas in tanks and bowls. I clean the bowls out every few days, dont have gravel in but that is just my preference and the fish are happy. None of my tanks have filters (betta ones) and some have heaters (mostly the OAP bettas)

Hope this helps if not ask again... :good: :good: :good:

I think it depends more on the size of the container rather than WHAT it is. Also, Bettas are tropical fish and like a fairly constant warm temperature, so even if your house is heated during the day, the water may get too cold at night. So you may want to consider a small heater as well. :good:

As long as the bowl is a reasonable size (at least 2 gallons of water in it in my opinion) and the temperature is stable and warm enough it should be fine. If you choose not to filter the bowl you'll need to keep on top of your water changes as Liz said. With a 2 gallons of water it's not hard to change a gallon every day or two. It only becomes a problem when you have 10 bowls :D The only other proviso I would mention is - Bettas jump, so make sure he can't jump out of the bowl.

I've always wanted to put a betta in a tupperware container or such, just to test it out. My house stays at 68-74 during the day and approximately 64-67 during the night....brrrrrrrrr.....too cold...but I could get a heater :shifty: but where could I put the betta  bad parents don't let me get anymore fish or tanks..GRRRRR..but anyways...my life story is over and that sounds like a cool idea guys :) :good:

Well if you're feeling adventurous you can create one of these. It's "only" 2 gallons but it's planted, heated, filtered. :hyper:

a betta in a tupperware container?

I got 2 boys with bad sb and they are in shallow long containers...they dont have far to go to surface to get some air...and they also got a plastic lid with holes in...not nice looking containers but fish are ok

that's awesome but i think my parents would consider it another tank. i was thinking something similar only not so...extravagant. i can't think of a better word. i figure a simple bowl like that with some gravel or those sparkly round stone things they sell in the bottom with a few plants in it would pass xD. we keep my house fairly warm because my mom freezes and my room's always warmer than the rest of the house.

not tupperware containers as in those tiny little ones. Heck no. It's more of a container that has a decent depth and a long surface for an easy swim. But it's still in the experiment stage to get good temperatures and where and lids or no lids..etc.

t.ropical_m.istx3, you meant live a small little bowl with a few things to make it look acceptable? Well try to make sure it's square or rectangular shaped so you can, if wanted, insert a small heater and a filter. Try to aim for a 1-2 gallon and to make it has a background so that the fish/betta (not sure) can feel safe and more comfortable. For a betta, I would only put maybe 1 or 2 little teeny tiny plants that can be suction cupped to the side of the tank. My betta absolutely loves to rest on them and hide underneath when necassary :)

A heater is really something quite essential if you have low temps at any time of the day. Ive got both filtered and unfiltered. If you go for unfiltered dont use any gravel, and you need to do very frequent water changes with full ones at least once a week. I have a female group and they live in a 10g tank with a filter and gravel. You need to provide lots of plants as they like to rest on them. Also wider rather than taller tanks as they breathe air.

sounds good. i was basically just talking about a simple "fish bowl" since i can't get anymore tanks. my room really is the warmest room in the house and that's where i have to keep it. i freeze, so it's never cool in my room. in the winter it's around 75 and in the summer...it's scorching. even with the air on. thanks for the tips.

your cold with 75!!!!!??????? I have it at 68 and I'm hott :shifty: well...sexy hott :p :p :p :p j/k j/k :shifty: but I think the thing you'd have to worry about is summer. Maybe turn off your heater ofcourse. But I think that the bowl would be sufficient and good if you keep it nice and maintained. Your lucky though. My parents consider a bowl or those little Kritter things a tank when they're clearly not. I can only have 1 bowl/mini kritter thing and a 10g...I was very surprised when my parents let me get it :) ok ok enough for now. Sleepy time. While I stioll have a few hours, Happy New Year 2007 :)

that's just a guess on the temperature. my mom freezes so we always have the house warm.
