My Female beta fish is suffering loss of color, appetite, and little movement. Pine-coning of the scales. Also has a hard time staying afloat possibly swim bladder problem. I originally diagnosed her with dropsy, so I treated the with amoxicillin and aquarium salts as directed. That did not work so I tried metroplex and kanoplex neither of them worked. When using antibiotics I did a 20% water change daily. What else could it be and what should I do?

Thanks

My water quality is good but not perfect. General hardness and Carbonate hardness are both a bit off. But PH, nitrites, nitrates, and temperature are good.

Dropsy is not a disease itself but a symptom of another disease which could be bacterial, viral or protozoan. It is difficult to treat because we need to work out what the underlying disease is and treat that - and in the case of a viral infection there is no treatment. In this case, since amoxicillin had no effect, the underlying disease is not likely to be bacterial.

Dropsy occurs when the underlying disease has caused kidney damage, and the fish's body fills up with fluid as a result. If the kidney damage is severe, no amount of treatment can cure it I'm afraid.

What about ammonia? In my experience that's the most common problem for bettas. GH and KH being a bit off probably wouldn't cause this.
