Hello:

I posted this on Emergencies and have not gotten any replies so I am hoping someone else can help:

I have been treating my betta for fin/tail rot for almost 4 months. I have been getting great help from a local fish store. Betta has been hanging in there and doing great even growing some fin back. But the disease had really rotted away all of his tail. We went on vacation and took him with us since he was on a complicated regimen of medication and water changes. When we brought him home we had the water tested just to be thorough since we had been using water from our vacation home and the water had high nitrates. The fish store recommended a 100% water change. He was laying at bottom the day after the change and I put some Cycle in and he perked right up. At the next water change, 50%, was when he took a downturn. He was down at the bottom of the tank and gasping. I don't know if he cannot breathe or he just has not enough tail left to swim or that the disease has just gotten to the point that it cannot be treated anymore.

SO ... I tested the water and had it tested at fish store and it was fine. He tried to come up to top but he could not stay up for long. I took him out and put him alone in our travel tank because the cory catfish were bugging him.

It has been 24 hours and he is moving from place to place in the tank on the bottom but not swimming. Just laying, breathing. His face is very white.

Is there anything I can do? He is 2 1/2 years old. One fish store recommended an air pump and the other said that it is just probably his time to go. I have not gotten the air pump. I hate to believe that he is suffering and will do what I need to do if there is anything else I can.

Please let me know what you think. Thank you in advance!

I received a reply from someone through My Assistant and could not reply back. I just want to say thank you so much for your thoughts.

This is a very difficult time for our family and we appreciate any thoughts or help.

Lissa and Betta

Hey Lissa, what kind of medicine has he been on? And what kind of dechlorinator do you use?
Now, if you've had him 2 and a half years, and got him from a petstore..he is more than likely well over 3 years old and that is a good stretch for a betta. If it is simply his time, you should rest assured knowing you did everything for him. Heck, he even got to go on vacation with you guys!

I've found that old bettas do sort of 'waste away' rapidly when it's just that time, no matter how long you may try to sustain them.

Hello!

We have had him on Metronidazole.

We have been using Stress Coat and Stress Zyme. Plus PH Regulator and Ammonia Bags as needed. We have also used special filters for Ammonia and Nitrates. It has been a long road with him and we have done whatever we can with the information we had. He is such a great fish with a wonderful personality!

Yes, his vacation was good (and it was not the first time he went away with us)!! He is a member of our family ... he goes where we go!

Thank you so much for your input. He is our first Betta and we will miss him dearly. But we figure if we get another one (Betta Two) then we will be able to "rescue" one and provide him with the best home that we can provide.

Again, thank you to each of you who have responded to our situation!

Lissa & Betta

Hello:

Betta passed this morning. It was torture to watch him at the end. When my son gets home from school we will bury him. He was such a great Betta!

Thank you again for your support. You helped tremendously!

Lissa

aww, I'm sorry, Lissa. He was an incredibly lucky boy though, people loved him til the end <3

Sorry to hear that, Lissa. You obviously did well by him as he had a good long life. Poor little thing, it must have been awful watching him get worse. I wish you lots of luck with your next betta, may he live longer and be even more beautiful :)
