Hello:
I posted this on Emergencies and have not gotten any replies so I am hoping someone else can help:
I have been treating my betta for fin/tail rot for almost 4 months. I have been getting great help from a local fish store. Betta has been hanging in there and doing great even growing some fin back. But the disease had really rotted away all of his tail. We went on vacation and took him with us since he was on a complicated regimen of medication and water changes. When we brought him home we had the water tested just to be thorough since we had been using water from our vacation home and the water had high nitrates. The fish store recommended a 100% water change. He was laying at bottom the day after the change and I put some Cycle in and he perked right up. At the next water change, 50%, was when he took a downturn. He was down at the bottom of the tank and gasping. I don't know if he cannot breathe or he just has not enough tail left to swim or that the disease has just gotten to the point that it cannot be treated anymore.
SO ... I tested the water and had it tested at fish store and it was fine. He tried to come up to top but he could not stay up for long. I took him out and put him alone in our travel tank because the cory catfish were bugging him.
It has been 24 hours and he is moving from place to place in the tank on the bottom but not swimming. Just laying, breathing. His face is very white.
Is there anything I can do? He is 2 1/2 years old. One fish store recommended an air pump and the other said that it is just probably his time to go. I have not gotten the air pump. I hate to believe that he is suffering and will do what I need to do if there is anything else I can.
Please let me know what you think. Thank you in advance!
