Hi, i have a new tank setup and all seemed to be going well. The tank is a 18gallon planted with a couple of rocks, the usual :)

I have 8 neon tetra and 1 male betta fish who i have taken a likeing to. I noticed some fin damage, but watching him i know he likes to rub against a fake plant i have. I thought this was maybe what done it so i watched him, and then i see the neons taking little nibbles on his tail. They kind of follow him around and harras him.

I was not sure if it is because they are hungry but i feed them both twice a day, and they eat all i put in.

Any one else had any problems with neons and betta fish, it would be a shame to loose the betta as he is such a pretty fish.

Thxs

Hello, I bought my first betta last week and he went in a 125 litre tank with 5 neons and 6 guppies. I didnt notice the neons going after the betta atall, but the next day my betta attacked a neon :( The neon seemed fine but the next day we found him dead! I removed the betta and now keep him in his own tank.
Neons can be nippy and will continue to damage his tail, its not that they are hungry they just like to nip and because its a long flowing tail they cant resist! Id seperate them before they do too much damage, is there a spare tank he could go in?

hi,

I don't have a spare tank but i have been watching them again and i think you are right he will have to come out. I just hope i can get down the shop before they do more damage. The damage they have done is already to much, poor little guy must be stressing out in there :(

Thanks for the rply

If you're looking for some good friendly tetras for him, I say pick up some Black phantoms. I have yet to see them even attempt to touch my betta, and he hardly even cares about them being around. They are very peaceful and nice, althoguh my re eye's like to chase the phantoms still, they don't bother my betta at all.

I put my Betta in with my Neons and he started chasing them and trying to attack them. I seperated him but my Neons got sick and I lost 8. I learned the hard way that Bettas and other small fish don't mix.

I've had my betta in with 5 neons, for about a month now, and they don't even notice each other. guess i got lucky in how aggresive my fish are lol.

You shouldn't keep bettas with neons. Many people find out the hard way. Some people think it'll never happen, but then one day the neons are gone, or the betta has a damaged tail. Hope your betta wil be ok!

I had the same problem with Neons nibbling at my Betta.
To be honest, the Betta will be just as happy in a tank on his own.
