Best media for canister filters?

I have an Eheim Pro II clone. That does like 300gph and has 4 baskets that take the same media size as Eheims.

It came with media but not sure if its the best.

Basket 1 - foam type filter
Basket 2 - Large ceramic noodles w. holes
basket 3 - Smaller ceramic stones
basket 4 - Wire mesh with black charcoal like material.

The directions made no mention of the proper order of media.

Each basket has a hole in it which must be for water flow. I don't know if it water goes down through that hole then up through the bottom basket or vise versa.

Whats the best media for 55 gal freshwater for tropicals.? Also best order of media?

LOL, lots of questions... Well, you don't want to keep in the charcoal stuff for too long, it'll make your water change color if you dont replace. Order doesn't really matter. I would have the sponges first, then gravel, then charcoal. This way you can just rinse the sponges instead of the gravel (which you never rinse under tap water). Hope that kinda helped.
