Hi everyone.

I'm looking for a magnetic glass cleaner. There's so many to choose from on Amazon and I'm confused on which is the best. I thought it might be easier to throw it open for discussion so I don't waste my money.

The reason I'm looking for one of these cleaners is because of my female angel. She now attacks everything I put in the tank to clean the algae off the glass - including my arm and hand. I was hoping that by having something there all the time and if I get into the habit of moving it across the glass every day she'll eventually accept it and allow me to clean my glass!

Thanks in advance :)

I bought one of these, it was useless, used it once now it just sits in the cupboard. Maybe there are better ones. You can have it if you want it.

Not much point if it's useless

 thanks anyway lol

There's some on amazon that appear to have inter-changeable blades but I can't figure out if these blades are inside the plastic surround. The problem I've got is that this idiot angel attacks the razor blade that I use now and it's only a matter of time before she gets cut badly by it so I'd need anything with a blade to be surrounded by plastic

I've have to say, I agree; they're rubbish. I had one years ago, but not now; I'd rather get my arm nipped, frankly! (and I used to have a shoal of tiger barbs that really hurt

)

Edit; forgot to say; I still think a cheap pan scourer is the best glass cleaner.

Ditto

I have two diferent types .....somewhere.....

Tend to find these magnetic cleaners not very good in cleaning glass of algae at all. Scourer sponge or a scraper works best for me but I hear you abut the angel attacking anything in the tank....hmm...how about a long handled scraper with attachments for scourer as well?

Like this for example -

Thats just for the general idea, there are bound to be cheaper ones somewhere.

I have a similar one i use from time to time, its not bad tbh.

problem I have with getting my arm in is I have to get the ladders out (I'm so short!) and I'm not supposed to go climbing cos my balance is bad. By the sounds of it so far I might have to carry on risking my angel with the razor blade!

I have some deep scratches that algae collects in and getting that off is hard

Ive had the sort that have a velvet covered magnet on one side and a another magnet covered on one side by some scratchie material. When the two magnets faced each other they pulled together and the velvet side protected the outside glass and the scratchie side cleaned the glass in the tank. Never really found the thing much chop, it got off some algae but never really 100%.

you hit reply at the same time there Ch4rlie.

I have one that I got at p@h that's got a blade on the end

This has been the best thing so far but it's dangerous for the angel cos she tries to 'bite' the razor blade ... it's gonna end in disaster if she carries on doing that.

I'm trying to work out what's best now

Those are the one's I've been looking at Baccus. I've mostly got a white 'film' on the glass with some green spot algae in some places so it's not really bad

I'm sorry we're not being much help!

It's a difficult situation; like you I'm quite short and have a couple of very deep tanks, so I do sympathise; I just haven't found any tools that work :(

no! you are helping! You've stopped me wasting my money for a start lol

I'm just trying to consider the options now. The blade on the long stick thing that came from p@h has been the best so far but it's dangerous for the angel. I've got like a rough scourer on a long arm too but that's a bit rubbish and gives me serious arm ache.

I know now what I'm looking for but I'm not sure it exists. What I need is a magnetic thing with a blade inside surrounded by plastic or rubber so the angel can't hurt herself that I can run over the glass easily. I'm just wondering if I can modify the tool I have to stop the angel cutting herself on the blade ... hmm

I've not tried a plastic one either so I've no idea if they work .... anyone else know ???

I've got both. A razor blade on and a magnet one. Magnet one is great for running across the glass every so often to clear the fine film algae that starts up, but is fairly useless for the harder green spot stuff, although it does eventually get it off if you really persevere with regular cleaning.

So for diatoms and softer stuff, the magnets are great, for proper spot algae, scourer or razor blade.

I'm still considering gluing a scouring pad to the magnet, but it will scratch the glass if it gets sand in it.

yeah, the sand thing ... I did consider that because I've already got some really bad scratches and it's taken me a long time to figure out that it's my snails dragging my sand over the glass that's caused them.

The biggest problem is the white-ish film that appears. I know it's just the bio-film but it annoys me. Still considering the options so keep up with the suggestions :)

The magnet based thingamies are fine with the white film stuff. Just don't expect much from them for harder algae.

Word of warning, the size tends to also denote magnet strength, which is important if you've got thicker glass, but a pain if it's too much as they judder more than scrape on the thinner tanks.

Oh, and floating, must be floating if you can't reach the depths without a ladder.
