best fish

Now I'm no catfish expert but I was always under the impression that were indeed certain species of plec that stopped eating algae when they reached maturity, I thought they were plecs that became more carnivorous or something along those lines............... While other species will continue to consume algae their entire lives. :dunno:

Ok now

Mam good for you.

Could someone address the subject and questions being repeatedly asked in different ways by a variety of members??

:hyper:

tokis - what you don't understand is that i wasn't the one that said 5-7 days...i do agree that a week without food is considered starving a fish..if you just read what i posted in several different places - i said "a couple days" is fine...a couple ... 2,3, ya know?

of course feeding your pleco algae wafers daily is not going to cause any problems....they are catfish, they can eat an insane amoutn of food..they can also get by on very little food just fine...skipping a day or two here and there will not cause any problems....

that was my point - you aren't doing anything wrong and neither is the person that DOESNT feed their pleco everyday and you never seem to accept that from people....your way isn't the only way to keep fish properly...and bunjiweb was posing an answer to a hypothetical question that wasn't even mentioned by anyone...i'm sure if you go into the wild, plecos wouldn't have the nice algae covered glass to suck on, etc....some MAY have a lot of algae, but some MAY also not be able to find food everyday...but they are both plecos

When you said "i would have to agree with bunjiweb on this one, sorry Tokis.." at the start i assumed you agreeing with everything bunjiweb was saying, which was why i talked directly to you about what i disagreed with what bunjiweb had said, sorry for the misunderstanding if you do not completely agree with what bunjiweb was saying.

who are u to say that? you're not a mod..are u?

if you are..why is this still opened?

and maybe the sticky will help, the one about plecs :)

It's their thread and I thought I saw this locked earlier but maybe I saw another. Anyhow the arguement in here has pretty much killed everyone else's interest in it I think.

the question was answered, so what's the problem`

I have a Common Pleco and a Golden Apple Snail and a Hillstream Loach. I have no algae on the glass. I have a cleaning magnetic thing in case, but I only use it to knock snails off the glass(not the Apple Snail obviously!). :) I feed the fish twice a day and the ones mentioned still hoover all over the glass.

i would have to vote for otos as the best algae eaters for a small to medium size tank... they're really peaceful, and can eat an amazing amount of algae. although they are sometimes said to be fragile, i have found in my experience that if they survive the first few weeks they will thrive and live out long lives

Just for comfirmation not all plecs will eat algea and some such as the Zebra plec (Hyspancistrus zebra) will starve to death unless offered a more meat based diet, Panaques (royal plecs) will also not survive if algea alone is offered since they are lignum eaters and only consume algea as a by catch when scraping lignum from the wood in the aquarium, vampire plecs are specialist mollusc eaters that prise mussles, clams and snails from their shells using their "vampire" teeth. Common plecs as they grow switch to a higher protein diet consisting mainly of the corpses of dead fish as algea alone is not enough to support their enormous bodies, offer a large common plec a choice between a cooked shelled mussel or a algea wafer and see which one it starts sucking on first.

The common assumption that all plecs are algea eaters is a major cause in the preamture death of so many L number species, as with all other fish groups there are plecs which have adapted to take advantage of a wide variety of available foods.

Oh and the best algea eater to clean the glass is the common bristle nose (Ancisterus species), allow one for each 25 gallons and your tank will be spotless.

 Very wonderful, CFC. Finally! I can now order some long fin albino bristlenose plecs AND some otos for my 100 usg confidently.

I've been watching since this thread was opened and have grown impatient with the arguements and lack of civility. Nevertherless, some have stuck to it and there are some good bits here--after one wades through the....

no offense intended but within the first 3 replies sucking loaches, a bristlenose, otos, and bulldog plecs were recommended....donno why you had to wait this long to choose a BN pleco when every post on this forum dealing with algae generally goes back to the BN

Sorry I offended you abstract. Perhaps I should post this to you privately. I'm not looking for an arguement, although I enjoy a good sharing of information discussion.

Some of the species mentioned I know nothing about. I was looking for information I could use in making my choice. I assume that's what Warr40 was looking for and some others checking the thread. It was frustrating to check and only find a page of arguing. Of course, I had to put in my 2 cents and uninvited opinion, as usual. So there you go: I'm part of the problem. :p

Warr40: Cool avitar  Is that a cichlid? Which one?

In addition, abstract, CFC gave the # of BN appropriate to clean the tank (which was more than I expected.) Meanwhile since I was unable to get what I was asking answered in the forums, I did what I should have done first and did a small amount of reasearch. :flex:
