I currently have powered internal filter in my aquarium.

I am concerned that it's not that effective.

What sort of filtration should I be using in my tank? Perhaps, what sized powered filter?

thanks

fluval 05 series external filters are good I have a 405 which I've been pleased with it's ease of use

Ah right. That's a good one. So the external filters are a better choice. I thought so.

If I wanted to spend a little less. Would there be another solution to use?

If ya shop around you can get a fluval 304 on a reduced price, as the new 05 is in the shops the price on the older models drop.
I got a good deal on a fluval 304 :)

any external filter at the right size will do there are still new 03 old stock being sold for real peanuts as the series are now old design-so you could buy and some spares for very little. As long as you get a bigger than the tank size min requirement you could do it very cheaply this way

I have a 203 fluval I've had for years(not selt priming) so you need to prime intake pipe first time you use it. The only thing I,ve replaced are the taps at £3.50 each as they go stiff with age and some clear tube. there are easier quick release fittings too.
they are easy to use just put a bucket under it turn off power and taps and undo. To restart open outlet first(release any air pressure) and then the inlet, allow to fill and turn on. if you can find one for say £20-25 pounds brand new then buy it or a secondhand or cheap 04 series-though I heard there were some shaft wear/noise problems when the shafts were worn on 04 series, I beleive the shaft/impellor was updated to stop this and avaliable as a spare part

If it was my choice - Eheim 2213 :) Fabulous filter and for £60 all inclusive, a very good deal and great value for money. Beats an internal any time. And I'm not a Fluval fan.

I'm not a Fluval fan either just never had any problems with them and there is always somewhere open at the weekend should it ever need spares. I note that you see hardly any spares for other makes stocked-this could be due to popularity of fluval or maybe they are not so reliable, but I've not heard of terrible failure rates or poor reviews

Both shops I frequent stock many (popular) eheim as well as fluval parts.

so the question on make would be-check that several places near you stock spares for the make you choose so should you have a problem you can get the spare off the shelf not have to order it.

If you buy Eheim - you will probably never need a spare part ;)
