Best Cannisters?

For build quality, reliability and long term use Eheims are the best.

I did like my Rena XP3 until I tried to get spare parts for it ( only a canister sealing o-ring ) , most LFS have a good range of the standard seals and spares for eheims and even the discontinued models still have spares available, even Fluval cannot compare with that.

Have read in several articles about how the flow can 'channel' through the Fluval range but have not had a Fluval ( apart from internals ) to say whether this is true

I have 2 Pro filters running on my large tank ( as well as 2 new Pro 2's ) they are over 10 years old but apart from new o-ring seals and impellors they are original and have never failed in use.

I always found the Ecco a fairly good workhorse for small tanks, design was good and the self priming system excellent.

Another good filter I have used in the Aqua Pro SP4, huge capacity and good flow, have had it 2 years and have never had a fault with it.

Funny that you mention that there are fake jebos, because jebo is a fake of other products. Dont you think that jebo canisters look very similar to eheims?

i was kidding about jebos being a fake... there a real company with some really bad reputation.

I'd have to second this, i bought my Aqua-pro cheap (£20 used - so great if your on a budget - i think the entry level for up to 200 litres is app £40 new) I bought it just to familiarise myself with externals really, as ive not owned one before, always internals - so far im taken back with how good it is! It's keeping my tank cleaner than my mates Fluval  (who i've always favoured in the past) The only disadvantage was i had to manually prime it by syphoning, lol i really cant find any other flaws

I have 2 Fluval 304s (earlier model than the 305) on my 75 gallon. It has been running since March of 2005 and I have been extremely pleased with them. The only issue I have had is that the hosed provided what deteriorated and developed holes, the ones actually in the tank that is. None of the exterior hoses have been a problem. I don't really consider that to be an issue with the flter and even that hasnt been a big problem other than when I forget to unplug my filter before a water change and the level gets down o where the filter is sucking air through the holes in the hose.

A couple people said the Eheim classic and that was the one i was looking at.

I could probably find it cheaper but this is where i originally found one.
Eheim classic

If you know of one cheaper let me know....i'm in the US.

jebo is a fake lol, you get what you pay for....

these external filter threads do amuse me, i mean everyone has their own opinion (naturally) and by the time the threads normally finished, no one wins (no filter stands out as THE ONE), coz everyone got their own little story and experience LOL, not saying its pointless, still pick up tips on using filters and personal experience always interesting.

i just use this example, i know someone who swears by Jebo and is constantly ribbing me for paying out for Eheims and he has atleast x2 of these Jebo ones from charthouse aquatics and had them ages, he says they as good as his Eheims!!!

I might try this one, its free delivery as well, if i do, will let you know how i get on, my ol' mucka's

I am sure someone will respond by telling me Eheims last longer, well to be fair to my Jebo loving fish friend, i cant defend that until he has had his Jebo's for many years like people have his Eheims

as for your 55 G tank and getting maybe an Eheim 2213, i would never get the lowest rated filter in a particular model (i.e Eheim 2213 as opposed to 2215 or 2217) unless the tank needed very low flow, because (well in the UK anyway) for just a small bit extra (in cash) you can get quite bit more in terms of volume and other ratings sometimes, i am particularly referring to Eheim 2026 and 2028 as I can get a new 2026 and delivery for £99 or a new 2028 with delivery for £129 just an example, as the 2028 has a significantly larger media volume and i if you look at the filter specs £30 extra is not much to pay if you already spending £99

Bit big for your 55 gallon though, just an example

EDIT actually 55 gallon is like 204 litres if you live in USA and 250 litres if you live in UK, i would use a 2026 or 2028 in that size tank if it was heavy stocked and didnt have plants

The Eheim classic 2215 is rated at about the same as the Eheim pro II 2026. Both are suitable for about 93 gallons. Not to mention the 2026 is about $80 more.

I also UG filter half of my tank using a powerhead rated for a 70 gallon tank, so i thought using the 2213 would be more than sufficient.

how creative can you possibly get with filters? all of them have similar designs! its a rectangular box with a pump on top!

i think all the big brands are all about the same, (yes even Jebo). just get a name brand one at a decent price. like i said about the jebo imitations, they break down because the material sucks and dont have replaceable parts.

Jebo is huge in southern california.

i think that many people are still cynical about the quality of chinese products

The thing about Chinese people that they wait for somebody else to make something, and then they take their ideas  The quality of Chinese products is pretty bad here(still some good ones though), but if you go back to china, sometimes they copy the product so well that its even better than the stuff here.

Well, im not sure if it was jebo that was the fake or not, i always get the names mixed up so i just assumed it was jebo because the logo looks familiar to the fake one and i havent seen any on shelves yet. I remember seeing this one canister filter that was an exact copy of the eheim det/dry. cant seem to find the thing anymore though.
