Eheim are the best canister filters, you get what you pay for.

hi everyone, i have a 72g bf tank with 3 discus in there right now n the filteration is 1 AC 500 n one sponge filter. I am adding a Eheim canister but im not sure which one i want to get: the Eheim pro 2028 or the Eheim pro wet/dry system. I will have 9 discus in the tank but i am gonna worry about the filteration first. Which one do u guys think i should get n y. Thanx

the 2028 if a brilliant filter - extremely reliable, efficient and requires little maintenance.

having said that, I'm currently waiting for a wet/dry to arrive - they now ship with free substrate which is very expensive.

the wet/dry is to run alongside the 2028. It is meant to provide very good biological filtration, but really needs good mechanical filtration from another source to let it work properly - otherwise it can get clogged quite easily.

the 2028 would probably be your best option, but I wouldn't say don't get the wet/dry.

Sorry this probably isn't much help

i have a aqua clear 500 n i guess that could be my mechanical filteration. But are u trying to say that the wet/dry isnt meant for cleaning water really?

If you are leaning toward a canister, check out the filstar XP series from Rena. I've had my XP2 and XP3 for almost 2 years and have no complaints. They are also much cheaper.

black convict - check out ebay and get a 2nd hand eheim, ive seen them go really cheap, because the build quality is so goos its ok to buy 2nd hand

from what I have read, the wet/dry has a pre-filter to stop big particles getting into the actual filter medium. Other than that it just has ehfi-substrat, which is designed for biological filtration (i.e. to grow bacteria), whereas normal eheim filters have some ehfi-mech to really clean the water.
a review I found said that if there is no other mechanical filtration (e.g. in a heavily planted tank) the prefilter gets clogged very quickly, and the reduced flow rate causes a major reduction in the effectiveness of this type of filter.

Since it hasn't arrived yet, I have no experience with how it will actually perform, but this is what I have found by trawling the internet (not really much info. available on these filters)

I'm running an Eheim 2128 thermofilter and would highly recommend it. As someone already said... you get what you pay for when getting an Eheim.

A wet dry filter is purely abiological filter however wet dries remain pretty much the most effective setup for a bio filter, of normal fishtanks
