Barney's 58l Modified Marine Nano

Lol yeah those pincers look pretty sharp, he's prolly a predatory type :). Tank looks great Barney, way to go. You've got this reefing thing down :D

Wow, your tank and everything are coming along awesome. BUT, not nearly as awesome as that tank room! Killer LCD's in there :D

Will add some new pics tonight if all goes well. My fuge still isnt a fuge yet (no macro algae) as I have moved my plate coral and gonipora into it. The plate coral was doing great in the nano but took up too much space and the gonipora was doing ok but I was having issues feeding it (the fire shrimp kept running over it as soon as I put food anywhere near it).

They will be kept in the fuge for now (which actually has better lighting anyway) and put in the big tank (when that eventually happens).

The clown fish is doing good and there have been a few new coral additions including a hammer coral which I only got this weekend so is still not fully extended.

I'm looking to get some small zoa and mushroom frags to fill in a few spots then this tank is pretty much finished. I might get a few peppermint shrimp and maybe another fish (probably a small blenny or goby) and I'm trying to figure out how to fit some bigger lights into the hood (considering just ditching the hood and getting a clip on 75-100w MH). I also need to actually get some macro algae for the fuge.

I gave up on the skimmer as it was rubbish. I might get a better skimmer later on but think it will probably be ok to run without one (not that much of a bio load). The fuge has really given me a massive explosion in my pod population and there are hundreds of little critters running around in it (which is the other reason I put the gonipora in there in the hopes it might get more food by itself).

I did upgrade the pump to the fuge from a newjet 600 to a newjet 800 which is much, much better (though right on the limit of what the overflow can handle).

Thats all the text bits out the way, next post will have some photos :)

*grabs popcorn and waits for pics*

Just have to get through another 3 1/2 hours of work (god its going slow today :) ).

Something I didnt mention is that the crab is doing fine in the fuge. I dont know quite how he manages it but he can get through the dividers in the tank to all three sections. Scared the crap out of me when I lifted the skimmer pump out and he ran out from underneath it!

I have a crab who actually discovered a tiny gap in the silicone holding one of my dividers in place and he just wiggles through between the fuge and the inlet/processing chamber.

Woohoo Photo's.

Might have to do something about these bubbles. Not too bad as most of them rise right to the surface.

Plate in the fuge. the center is normally much more opened but I had too much flow over it.

My hi-tech light bracket and reflector (couple of bits of 1x1" wood I had and some tin foil..)

Hammer is going to be moved to a better position though it doesnt look to bad atm (lot more extended then yesterday and only been in a couple of days).

Had a nightmare getting these up. My memory card corrupted so I lost about 60% of the photo's on it, My image host died halfway through uploading and now I just posted them here and it took me to a 404 page :(

Wow Barney, looks great. Hard to believe that's your first marine tank :good:

Thanks :) I'm quite proud of how its turning out but it has just made me even more impatient about getting the bigger reef tank set up. Its also really frustrating not having a very good choice locally for SW stuff (and I'm not at home enough to take live deliveries :( ).

I have been after some nice coloured mushroom and zoa frags/small colonies but the two lfs near me only ever seem to have very drab looking brown ones (which are still nice but I really need some colour in the tank now).

Would also like to get another fish in there (goby or blenny most likely). Anyone got some good suggestions for small, reef safe fish? or maybe an interesting invert (that would live with the blood shrimp and clown).

I'm a sucker for purple firefish :)

I was thinking about one of these but I wasn't sure if it would get on to well with the clown in there in such a small space. Thought a blenny/goby would be the better option as they will stay on the lower levels/in the rocks and out of its way.

Would be cool to have a firefish in there as well :)

You could do a firefish and a blenny prolly. I'd add the firefish first, and try to get a more mature one as opposed to a small one

I went and got a firefish today :) (red one, the purple ones didnt look so healthy).

He hid up for all of 5 minutes and now he is swimming around out the fornt like he owns the place :) The clown did have a few experimental rushes at him but as he didnt even flinch the clown seemed to give up on the idea of trying to intimidate him.

I moved the hammer coral up higher into slightly more flow and it looks like it is extending a bit better now. The xenia has been moved to the of the tank in the middle (where the gap is in the pictures above). It seems to really like this spot as it has started pulsing (which it wasn't doing when it was at the bottom of the tank). It is really quite amazing to watch.

I have picked up a couple of very small zoa frags which are in the fuge and once these have grown on a bit they will be attached to the bottom left hand rock and then I think the tank is pretty much finished (unless anyone else can think of something more I can do with it :)).

I have ordered a Tunze Auto top up for it as well.

More photos :)

Top down view of the tank, cant see much because of the water movement but does show that there is more room in there then it seems.

Fuge, as you can see the goni seems to be doing pretty well so far (Really hope it stays this way).

Plate coral seems to be doing really well too.

And last but not least a quick video (sorry quality isnt great because it was done with phone).

Not a massive update, just a few pictures with the new macro lens I got today :)

The xenia has spread itself onto the back of the tank which is really surprising (not been in there that long). I have also found a really strange pink and white critter which is attached to a rock like a soft coral and extends a couple of clear tubes. It also seems to have a "prickly" looking "back". Tried to take some photos but because it is fairly small and under a rock its hard to get a decent photo.

Its on the bottom left hand side near all the mini brittle stars (I have hundreds of mini brittle stars :) ). I didn't resize so click to open full size.
