Barbs or Corys?

Saturday I am taking a road trip (1:15min) down to my closest fish shop, but I can not decide on who to buy: either 6 tiger/various barbs or 6 corys. I am planing on purchasing a pleco at a later date (have no algae of him to eat now). The only fish that are curently in my 46 gal bowfront are 6 zebra danios. Tank is cycled. Any suggestions before 10:00am eastern time on sat?

I'd go with the corys. I'm still not sure about keeping barbs and danios together.

As long as you keep the barbs in a shoal of 6 or more, there shouldnt be a problem. I have 7 in my tank and they dont bother the other fish at all.

well, it depends what you're looking for. I personlly would always go with cories cos they're just ace.

46 gal? heck, yeah, get both

I'd go for Corys, myself. But hey, you have a 46-gallon - you could get both (as long as the Barbs would get along with the Zebras okay). If you're only going with one, I'd vote Corys. I love my Corys!

I had to seperate my barbs and cories becasue no matter how dark the tank was when I feed my cories, my barbs would steal their food.
The barbs also made my cories nerveous and they hide all the time.
They never nipped them or bothered them but they were so active that my little cories were afraid to leave their caves.

Can't go wrong with corys. Just good looking, fun to watch fish that have interesting quirky behaviors.

As clutterydrawer points out, it depends on what you're going for overall in your tank.

If you want a nice, active, peaceful community tank, you can't beat corys. If you want a nice, active, semi-aggressive community tank, go with the tiger barbs.

Ask yourself what other fish are going to go in this tank eventually. Are they mostly bottom feeders? Barbs.
Surface dwellers? Corys.
Gourami? Corys.
Kribs? Tigers.
You get the idea...

You really need an idea of what the tank will look and feel like in the end before buying fish, IMO.

Thanks for all of the advice. I think I will get the corys and sit back and decide what to go with them. I really like the barbs but corys are too damn cute to not get. Maybe there are some other mid tank dwellers i could get?

I'm glad that you decided on the corys. I love mine.

Platys are nice, and very colorful, mid level fish. Or, if you are looking for a schooling fish, the glowlight tetras are lovely and peaceful. Here's a link about them:
