I believe it's to increase the tail spread.

By the way, I'm still drooling over this guy. Yellows are my favorite and I LOVE him.

Definitely his fins/tail improved after I cut it.

If the fins are torn and infected with fin rot what I do is literally cut it by a scissor. Then the fins will grow back and the next thing you know is they are already nice and the fish wont have any problems of swimming.

I only cut the edge.
