I have read that they are easy to breed, which makes them appealing. However I have also read that they can be quite nippy, which detracts from the appeal...

Would be good to hear others experience of these little critters, like how much they breed, their behaviour in general and when spawning, community compatibility, etc.

Thanks in advance.

I have 3 Scarlet Badis Badis in my community tank. They've gotten along really well with all the other fish, and have never been nippy. They are slightly hard to feed though, mine will only eat Frozen/Live foods. But I'd definitely reccommend them, very pretty and cute.

I haven't tried to breed them at all, and they haven't bred by themselves, so I can't say anything on that.

Hi Chrismr,

This is a good article on breeding Badis here:

Breeding Badis species

and there are some review by people who keep these fish here:

Badis reviews (This takes a while to open but worth reading :))

Badis are fairly shy fish, and they are also ambush predators that don't like fierce food competition. My dad has several badis in his main tank, and he has a decent amount of experience with breeding them. Try PMing him (Lucky62)

I've never kept just a pair , I heard males will bully females to death .

I have a colony , 12 or so now , I started with 6 .

Badis species can be very similar to many cichlids in general as well as breeding behavior .

what size is your tank ? I would try getting a group , more females than males would nice , but good luck .

I have in my tank many types of hiding places from small 1.5" flower pots , coconut shell halves to rocks ,slate , many live plants to form shelter , as the saying goes , the more places you give them to hide , the more you'll probably see them , I do .

breeding : the male pics the spot , then he gets a female to join him , breeding is not out in the open , badis are cave spawner's , I had one make a spot under a large piece of shale .

the males take care of the eggs , and then newly hatched fry .

raising fry would be easier in an established tank , simply because the fry will find small critters to eat in suck a tank . newly hatched brine shrimp is said to be one of the easiest foods to offer fry , I've not yet used them . A spawn can yield over 60 fry , though as time passes the number will most likely drop .

back to adults , never had a problem with any of mine going after anything other than another badis , I keep them in a 70 gal with apistos , checker board cichlids both peacock and goo oboo gudgeons as well as cherry barbs , rasbora, and small rainbow fish ...........and something I forgot ...........my badis spawned in this tank , and the majority of what I have made it to adulthood , think of how many I could have if I removed the pair for breeding .

adding salt to water should avoided with badis , the don't handle it well , other wise ph around 7 , regular water changes , good food and you're fine ......food : mine have never eaten flake or pellet , don't think any will , mine will eat freeze dried foods ; blood worms , brine shrimps crushed krill and daphnia , frozen foods ;brine shrimp and blood worms , and live brine shrimp , I've never offered any small live insect larva , would if I could find a safe / reliable source . I'm sure they'd eat live black worms too , but I never feed them to any of my fish anymore .

Hope that helps , feel free to pm me with any questions

Cool, thanks for all the info guys. Especially lucky for typing all of that out

Was considering them to go in my 30 gallon. Think they sound like a good fish to give a try :D
