Bad Mixes Of Fish

Those who have done/do this, justify yourself! I'm interested to see others opinions. I'm always over on yahoo answers and it grates me how many ignore good advice and do it anyway (for instance someone asking the best temperature to keep goldfish, angelfish, mollies and platys and stating they want no other answers, just the temperature, implying they know full well they're doing wrong, but doing it anyway).

Zoos don't put their leopards and polar bears together because they just want to, the animals need different environments, when will the same apply to domestically kept fish? GAH.

So why o why? Just plain ignorance or stubborness? Rant away!

Interestingly I was just reading about guppies being tolerant of salt past the 1.024 mark, has anyone ever tried to mix guppies into a marine environment? I'm just interested to know if it works or not 'cos I only know the theory of it.

my doctors surgery keeps goldfish with clown loach guppys bn's platty and phantom tetra much as ive told them they PAY a company to come in and tend their tank and they supply the fish.
ive often showed them fungus on their mollys and its just plain cruel but what can you do ............

Many plecs do best in cooler temperatures (i.e Chaetostoma bulldog plecs).

I completely agree, and it looks completely wrong as well. i saw a tank for sale on ebay i think, and thought the same!

Many plecs do best in cooler temperatures (i.e Chaetostoma bulldog plecs).

thats what we were told he is doing fine and has been there for nearly a year problem free the tank is 260L so there is plenty of space as well

An aquaculture firm in Hawaii bred its own guppies for feeder fish for a bangai cardinalfish breeding program. They kept the guppies at that specific gravity with no real problems seen. At 75% marine strength enough guppies started breeding to make a viable breeding community.

I have seen reports of short term survival at 150 and even 200% strength marine water by guppies, but this is for a matter of days and not really anything indicative of them surviving long term.

Well, technically, if the leopards and polar bears are both kept outside (they usually are, with the option to go inside), they are in the same "environment" in the sense that the temperature, etc. is the same (as in the fish example).

I would chalk it up to ignorance... They are "fish," so they must all be the same, right? Polar bears and leopards are clearly not the same, but goldfish and tropical fish, are, on the surface, both "fish."

I actually have koi with silver dollars, tetras, plecos , gourami, and crayfish! i havent lost a fish in over a year and all the fins look amazing ( no nipping ) i have a hard time believing experts regarding compatibility. With an obvious exception being the agressive fish like ciclid, oscar etc...

how big is that koi? in a year it should be nearing 12" and anything small would be going missing, if it's smaller, then something IS wrong.

what temp is the tank heater set at as the koi like cooler waters better.

Yeah, if that koi isn't eating smaller fish it will for sure have to move!
