A stupid question maybe, but is there any danger of infection slight or otherwise to a person from the filter bacteria media in an aquarium eg squeezing the filter sponge while perhaps having a small cut on ones hand or arm?.

Yes, there is a slight risk but as with any bacteria if you are otherwise healthy it won't affect you & always wash your hands after

I doubt it. About a month ago I had a cut on my hand and haven't had any problems since, despite having put my hand in the tank for routine maintanence.

There is a chance, though slight, of bacterial infection from an aquarium but not from the bacteria that do the filtration rather from other bacteria and fungus that can sometimes inhabit the tank. There are many articles you can find on this subject. Here's one overview.

i wouldn't worry about having the odd cut, obviously best to wash your hands well before and after doing anything on the aquarium.
