That rock isn't good. It will leak calcium into the tank, and raise the Ph, eventually kinng the fish! I would take it out!

Yeah, i thought it would buffer the PH until i tested the tap water and it is PH8 anyway so just left it in. Didn't realise it would leak calcium. Might take it out then! :good:

8.0! That it high! I doubt those neons will like it that high! The Ph inside the tank is most likely going to be at least 8.5, and although adaptable, neons will prefer a lower Ph (7.5-6.0ish)! I recommend taking that rock out asap. Besides, it doesn't suite the tanks atmosphere anyways...

I decided i will remove the rock, but my tap water has a PH of 8. I will try bog wood. Is it possible to get all the tannins out before putting it in the tank? or is it the tannins that lower the PH?

I think that the tannins have something to do with the Ph going down, it must carry some sort of chemical to lower it, that is carried in the tannins ??? Also try filtering your tap water through a bag of Peat Moss, simple way of lower the Ph a little. You can always try RO, and I think de-ionization will also lower the Ph, but you will need to add trace elements back into the water, and the systems can get pricey. I saw an de-ionizing filter that you put tap water through, for about 80 dollars US, so not too bad.

Dont know why i keep getting this message over and over. Is someone being funny??

Anyway, thanks for all the advice. I think i'll try bogwood. Seems easiest and wouldn't have to keep changing it.

Keep the comments coming!! (except that one i've had about 10 times over) lol

more pics once changes are made. Watch this space :good:

He keeps saying it to boost his comment count thingy... He will get into trouble for doing that, as that isn't allowed on this forum...

The tannins will definitely lower the pH in the tank. Although, if you place the bog wood in the tank right away it may make the tank really brown, so soak it in a bucket. Tannins have flavones in it. Similiar to an apple browning if u bite it and let it sit for a day. The browning of the apple and the water is known as phenolic and has a complex pathway to make the phenols such as flavones. They also use tannins in wine to lower pH. Lots of people use almond leaves to get the tannins from there to breed beta's. Good luck with lowering the pH.

By the way the tank does look really good. Post some pics when you get the bogwood in! :good:
