i've heard that many of you guys will sell your baby bettas (fry) to local LFS, is this true? i just e-mailed my LFS and this was the reply:

Thank you for your interest in PETsMART. There are strict guidelines that we must follow in order to receive Fish. PETsMART is only able to work with federally regulated organizations to get our Fish from. Once you have been deemed a regulated company, then speak with the Store Director at the store that is closest to you and they will be able to assist you.

Thank you,

PETsMART

so anyways, i might end up trying to breed bettas (i'm 16), but before i do i'm trying to think ahead and figure out where i can put the baby bettas after...can someone help me out?

Yeah, forget PetSmart, you'll need to find a small independantly owned shop. That's what I did.

ohhh okay :D that makes sense...i think i know some small local shops (no big chained petstores right)?

hmm time to look in the phonebook -_-

what on earth do you guys do with all the fry? -_- you can't possibly sell ALL of it to petstores..

I'm going to keep my picks for auctions and shows, everything else goes to the lfs :)

ooo, well you breed lovely bettas :D i don't know of any betta show around here anyways :/

thanks a ton wuv :D i'm going to call some stores and ask them about it later on :)

Ya, it's hard to breed GOOD bettas then sell them to the lfs. I asked about selling crowntail fry to my lfs and the guy said he can give me like $1.50 a piece for them. He doesn't understand the difference between veiltails and other tails. Sometimes it's hard to find people that know about bettas and are willing to pay the price for nice ones.

yeah, people that do not know bettas will treat the CT as though they have finrot or some kind of other disease :( i doiubt any of my LFS will undersatrndt he difference between a CT and a DT...i want to breed bettas, but i dont' know if i could make money off by selling through (i doiubt i could)...oh well still fun

A Petsmart employee told me that Petsmart breeds their own fish.

I think he said they have about 200 different species, but their not all available year round.

I'm pretty sure they would never buy fry. :dunno:

Well if that's true they probably have breeders that sell exclusively to them. They wouldn't breed them in their stores, but they would have contracts with breeders that they sell their stock to them. This can't be true on all fish though as many have never been bred in captivity.

yeah i think petsmart would order from a specific breeder or something.

anywyas, i really want to breed the bettas....but i just need to be creative about where i can give them too. I got a few friends that already wanted them if it works out :D but that's only about 5 bettas taken..

could someone give me advice as to what i could POSSIBLY do with teh bettas? they're not anything too special though (i can't get hold of CTs or HM or nething like that) :/ i know i should try and breed good bettas only, so i'll be keeping my eye out for them these few months. Right now i have a all white male veiltail, and a cambodian female (white body, red tail, that's cambodian right?)..not sure if she's a Ct, i've been looking at her very carefully and she might be one, though ti's very very hard to tell :/

That's what I meant. Thanks Sorrell. :)

Never thought of the ones not bred in captivity. :dunno:

I'll have to investigate further because now I'm curious. :ninja:

The girl who orders the fish loves my dog.
I'll try to ask some questions while my dog is giving her kisses. :shifty:

If you want to breed the best way to go is a lps but if they dont want them go online or I also say the newspaper is a good idea.

I will be selling some of mine to other local breeders, at my local Betta Assoc. meeting/auctions, Aquabid, I'll be using some for showing (which will then be sold at the shows auction afterwards so I don't have to pay shipping to get it back), the best of the best I will keep for future breeding and then the rest will go the the LFS.

It's good that you're thinking ahead of all the logistics of Betta Breeding...however, if you think you're going to make some money (even a little) by breeding Bettas, you are very mistaken, Lol. Very few people actually profit from breeding Bettas, and those people have been doing it for many years, have HIGH quality Bettas and LOTS of room. There is alot of money you need to put out to get started and the cost continues as you go. If someone breaks even they are doing GREAT! And if you only plan on selling them to friends and the LFS, you definetly will come no where close to breaking even or making a profit. If you really wanted to try and make some money on them you would definetly need show/very good quality fish or you'll never be able to sell them for a decent amount.

However, if you want to breed for the fun/satisfaction then go for it when you're ready (have growout tanks, 100's of jars/barracks, food, spawn tanks, SPACE, TIME, MONEY, the list goes on, hehe).

lol okay, so breeding betta isnt' exactly going to be my part time job for hte summer  i'm actually just going to try adn breed them for fun and watch them grow up :) that's going to be my paycheck lol.

I'm timing it right so that i'll start preparing them during the summer (2 months of no school yay!), i'm still looking into a growout tank, but i read somewhere that it is may be possible to use a big rubbermaid container (the really big ones) for hte fry :*) becuase another 40G and my mom will kick ME out of hte house :*) I have the spawning tank ready  food i will get once i start conditioning the pair (still wondering where i could get a microworm culture, BBS i can get very easily here).

soon i'm going to have a checklist lol. But i'm still quite a ways away from even conditioning the two bettas, nevermind having eggs and raising the babies :)
