Oooh sometimes I wish my parents wouldn't help me so much! :X

I spent the past two weeks carefully cleaning my tank with ammonia (the only thing I knew I could at least test for levels of in my tank.) and asked my dad to put my replacement impeller in my filter. Well I went to grab it and stuff it in the tank and...it was sparkling clean. Too clean in fact, and when I sniffed it, I smelled cleaner on it!

He used shower mildew remover on my filter pump! I can't stick it in my 25 gallon it'll kill the fry when they move in! Now what?

Hm...You're right, I don't feel quite so bad anymore. But what am I going to do about my filter pump? I need it, but if I stick it in the tank it'll kill anything that goes on from this point forward.

Soak it in a mild bleach solution to remove the detergent, then leave it soaking in water with dechlorinator for a few days, changing the water daily. That should remove the detergent and any bleach residue. Should be able to use it again within the week.

Oooh thank you Emma! That is a great solution! I've been using vinegar which my pet store reccomended. I told my dad there is no way I'm going to stick my precious baby fish in that 25 gallon no matter how many precautions I take until I got a test fish. So I went to the store and bought the pretty sparkley betta I've been drooling overthe past few weeks. I also bought a new carbon for the fish tank and I'll run it through with that for a little while too.

your usein a betta as a guinnie pig :(...oh well at least your not useing a fish your fond of..

Actually if you really want to know I used it as an excuse to get an extra betta. ;) I'm not just gonna stuff him in there and hope he lives. I've rinsed, and rinsed, and RINSED that filter pump, I have a new carbon to help clean it out, I've washed it in viniger and ammonia and everything else recommended by various people that I'm relatively certain are safe, I even left it to the abuse of the full summer sun.

What I plan to do is once I am sure I got it all off and I got an hour or so to observe him I'll put him in there for about that amount of time and take him out the minute I see any problem signs. He's not going to die if I have anything to do with it, you should see his amazing coloring. He's kind of a extra shiny steel blue. If you have any other suggestions I'm game.
