Are filters necessary for cycled tanks?

Hey all,
I have a 2.5 gallon mini-bow and use the undergravel filter that came with the kit. Originally, I wanted to avoid using the filter because of its current (don't want to stress my boy out). But when I mentioned this to my lfs, I was warned that cycling was impossible without a relatively strong filter, because the good bacteria needs a reliable oxygen flow. I asked about converting to a quieter whisper filter, and was told that it was too weak for the good bacteria. So I've continued using my mini-bow's undergravel filter, and my tank is nicely cycled.

The thing is, since I started using the filter, my boy has not made a single bubble nest. (He'd made one once before). I have a sneaking suspicion that its because he doesn't like the current in his tank.

So what do you all think. Is a strong filter necessary for keeping good bacteria? Do I even need one? I'd love to hear your opinions.

Thanks! :)

It is ok if your betta didn't make bubbles. You not breeding him anyway. LOL  He is not stupid to make bubbles anyway since the current will distroy his bubbles nest. LOL ;) No worried. :D
