I have recently bought a second hand Elite Style 60 aquarium, but I have found the lights that came with the tank (sun-glo 15W T8) is really noisy.
I would like to have some plants in my tank when I get it set up but having this light on for 8 hours a day is going to be really disracting :(

Can I change the light to a quieter one? Does anyone have any recommendations and is it easy to do?

Thankies! ^_^

you know, when i had an elite kit with light i noticed the light was really noisy aswell, im not sure its the tube more so the power thing, erm forgot what they called but its the light starter thing that is most likly the source...

Oh.. I don't know anything about lights and this is my first aquarium :S does this mean that if I change the light, it wont make a difference?

Thanks

As razer121, says it may be the starters, it you look at the end of the tubes you will find them there, I don't know how easy they are to replace. When I got my first tank, a gift from a mate, the first time I switched on the lights there was a horrible buzzing noise then the tube went black and no lights. I had to get a new lid and light unit, but as the tank was free it wasn't too Bad, still enough though.

Oh I see, thanks for the quick reply.
Having a quick search on it, is it somethin like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AQUARIUM-LIGHT-START...1QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks :)

that is a starter but, from the one i had your unable to get to it in the elite lids, although i didnt look to far into it as i had a different tank to replace my faulty one, can you get a picture of your lid? or at least a model number? can i also ask you to be more specific with the sound?? i mean how loud is it? if you move away from the tank can you hear the buzzing over the filter? if so then you may have the problem mine started to have....as almost all lights to make some kind of noise, its just normal i guess but if yours is starting to get louder then it may well just go pop one day...have you tryed wiggling the wire?? good luck on this, keep us posted :good:

Hi , I have the Elite 95 and the starter is built into the hood , I think it's sealed. Quite a loud humming noise when switched on.

Yeah I don't think I can get into the light :( The buzzing is a lot louder than the filter but it doesn't get louder as time goes on, and it doesn't make a difference when I wiggle the wire :( the sound is like a dull buzzing/humming but quite loud, you can even hear it in the next room!

I found a clear seal lid that would fit mine but it's black whilst my tank is silver and just the lid is over three times what I paid for the tank!

hmph, mine was the elite 95, if you could id advise taken it back and replacing the whole tank...seems that pets at home around my area have stopped selling it due to alot of people having problems with it, but thats only what one chap there said so i might just be the odd few, anyway have you taken the lid of and switched the lights on? maybe its vibrating? sorry im trying eveything i can think of here lol im starting to run out of ideas, if its none of the above and you cant find a fault with it, then i would say its something you will either have to put up with or get a new tank mate

Haha, okay thanks for your help :)

I've noticed that some people have managed to put in new lights by drilling holes in the side of the lid and then doing something.. I guess I'll look into that and then get my boyfriend to do it for me ;) as I can't take it back because it's used.

Hi know I posted earlier , looking into lighting at the moment, if you find out how to add a second light could you let me know , would be most appreciative :good:

where did you get it from? im sure you can take it back?? faulty item not doing as its supposed to would be your argument, so even if you have used it your in your right to a refund/exchange.....

Well, I got it second-hand off ebay, I have no idea where they bought it from, and how old the tank is, so I think I wont be able to bring it back?

Thanks

hm yea i think you may be abit stuck there then lol, erm next thing would be to contact elite directly?

Hmm I guess it might be worth a try.. but I doubt they'd do anything :( I've found one of these now:
linky
which I think will work :D though it'll have to go over the feeder flap.. but still be worth it for silence haha.

I guess now I need to figure out if it is the starter or the light.. But I guess it probably is most likely to be the starter.

Thank you by the way for trying to help me :) :)
