Ok this is a lame question but I'm not going to be using the carbon insert (unless I need to rid of meds or other tannins) so I was wondering... Should I double up on the aquaclear sponge, double up on bio rings or just put some filter floss in there aka poly fiber?

I put sponge on first layer, then floss, then ceramics on top. I put in new floss every time I service the media. I just rinse the ceramics and rinse the sponge.

Ok thanks!

More ceramic rings.

No sponge, just poly floss on the bottom of the basket, then a big net bag (or two small ones) of biorings on top.

Change the floss weekly, no messy nasty sponges (that clog easily) to deal with...about $25 for a bag of the poly, lasts me nearly a year and a half before I run out, changed out in 5 HOB's every week

Well imma stick with my sponge, but I might use poly fiber in the middle or just double up on bio rings... I'm sorta leaning to the bio rings... (Less expensive lol)

No problem with that, double up on the ceramic rings.

Once you get tired of cleaning nasty sponges every week during your WC, you can thank me for the pro-tip then...:shifty:

I dont want to change media out every week either. Ive also seen how their cleaned on yt, and it looks really easy. A few squeezes in the old tank water and its good. Seems really simple.

After the tank is established, the floss isn't really "media", it's just disposable mechanical filtration.
Your plan is good, it's what most users of these HOB's do...just always remember to clean ALL filter media in old tank water, not tap water, and never let it dry out.

Yes I know that definitely. Thank you though!

Do you think the aquaclear biomax filter inserts are good? Or should I use fluval biomax?

I just ran 3 sponges in my AquaClear HOB filter. It holds beneficial bacteria and traps gunk. Sponges are easy to clean and last for years.

Is the water flow bad at all with all those sponges?

You can have 3 sponges or ceramic beads and 2 sponges. It doesn't really matter. I just liked 3 sponges and it gave me a spare sponge if I ever needed an established filter for a new or quarantine tank.
