aquababies?

I had the impression that healthy bacteria would not survive without a steady supply of oxygen? Would enough plants be able to do the job?

No, especially with no good source of light.
Even if this were a perfectly balanced ecosystem... the fish would have barely any room to live in

After all the money spent on filters and the like I was wondering for a bit if it was really all unecessary and all I needed was some established gravel

I will never cease to be amazed by what complete and utter filth industries will peddal at the cost of lost lives just to earn a buck or two. I'm really getting sick of the public mentality that fish aren't really animals, and because they're not fuzzy, or pettable, or super-intelligent, their lives are meaningless and can be bought, sold, and thrown away like a friggen toy. I'm getting even more sick of the overall notion that if an animal can survive in a tiny, crappy environment, they should be kept there; a mouse can survive in a one gallon bucket on some shavings if you give them food and water, but it has no quality of life. A tiger can survive in a cage in your back yard, but it has no quality of life. A betta can survive in a cup of water, but it has no quality of life. And frankly, a person could probably live in a bathroom stall, but he or she would have no quality of life.

:grr: I haven't gotten a reply back. I guess I put a little too much truth in mine, with irresputable proof to back it up, so they couldn't type up some bunch of garbage and send to me. :dunno: (grumbles: comparing a teacup to a lake....)

Or maybe they Googled STUNTING, and have nothing to say for themselves.

I'd like to shove them in a plastic storage tub and make them live in it for a week..I'd even poke a hole in the top, throw in a few potatoe chips, a bottle of water, and put a potted Gerber Daisy in for them to survive with...and see how they felt about it afterwards.

Oh and BTW....I know lots of people (myself included) that can pet theri fish. If you take time and play with them..they get used to your hands...and will actually seek them out. They are just as much animals as any other "animal", complete with emotions and feelings.

/off rant...sorry it just makes me ill for people to mistreat animals  (and I am not feeling good to boot :sly: )

Yea, I had one betta that liked being pet; I think what I meant was that the general public doesn't percieve them to be something you can snuggle with, which automatically lowers them on the scale of how much most people are concerned about their welfare. Take pigs; they're just as clever, if not moreso, than a cat or dog, but because they are bristly, and their anatomy forces them to mud bathe in order to cool down, everyone's ready to stick a form in them.

i LIKE THIS BIT......
