Hi.

I'm in the process of purchasing an Aqua One 550 Corner Tank for our local Hospice. Does anyone have one - could you let me know whether you like it or not? What's good and what's bad about it? Would you recommend it? We currently have a standard tank, internal filter, etc - the Aqua One has the filter in the hood (new to me!). I'm also advised an airstone is not essential as the pump circulates the water. Is this enough? There's no space in the hood for the airstone pump unit anyway. Would appreciate some advice please before I spend the money.

Thanks, Lin

Ive not had that exact tank, but i do currently have an Aqua 1 500 tank and i hate it. The lid doesnt fit properly so when you open it water drips down the outside of the tank, the feeding hatch is cheap and nasty and the tank build is not near the quality of a Juwel tank.

Yes they are cheap as chips but you get what you pay for imo. I personally wouldnt buy another and am about to give this one to a friend as a starter tank.

Oh dear! This is not good news. The Hospice would like a corner tank (they currently have a Seabray 27 gallon rectangular 36"x12"x15") but most that I have looked have bad access for cleaning and they are too deep to clean properly. I thought the Aqua One had good access.

So, any ideas for an alternative? I have looked at the Jewell tanks but access seems limited. I would only buy a corner tank if I personally can get into it to keep it clean and looking nice, otherwise I shall persuade them to have another rectangular.

Back to the drawing board then!!

i know someone with the juwel trigon 190 (corner) they said that all the flaps are removable and it is reletively easy to get into the tank for maintenace.

I've heard only bad stuff about the Aqua One tanks  . But the Filters are meant to be brilliant :good: .

Juwel or Rena will be my next tank. My Jewel is dead easy to maintain with no mess. :hyper:

We have a big aquaone tank setup at work, it's not the same as the one you mean I don't think. It has an external canister etc.

We do sell smaller aquaone setups with the filter in the hood.. they seem ok, I've never used one though. On the whole I do think Aquaone make some quality stuff.

Thanks folks for your responses.

The Jewel Trigon 190 corner tank is much bigger than we currently have at 190 litres - 42 gallons. Our current tank is 122 litres - 27 gallons. The Jewel certainly looks worth the extra £100 over the Aqua One but it's also a matter of space - the tank is going into a Day Room for visitors. Mind you, the rectangular tank is across the corner so maybe the Jewel would not take up any more room than that.

I'm only a short person (5'2") and I need to be able to reach the bottom of the tank to clean it! Maybe I should buy some steps!! I seem to remember with the Jewel tanks that they have fixed glass cover / support strips across the corners that make it difficult to clean down and into the corners which was what was putting me off.

Rena tanks looks lovely with a lovely price!!

Looks like I'm between a rock and a hard place! Another trip to the shops is required, methinks, to look at them both again.

I have 2 Aquaones (see signiture) and yes they are built to a budget bit IMO they are lovely looking tanks/cabinets. With a little tweaking the filters are brilliant and keep a constant 0-0 on ammonia/nitrites.

My main tank has been running for a couple of years without fault.

Would buy another tomorrow :good:

the premium aquaone tanks such as the windsor 66, regency series etc are very nice, cabinets are much sturdier and nicer looking that the juwel range and come with an external filter, although some of the aquaone cheaper models are a little cheap looking

EDIT - All the flaps on the windsor 66 (corner tank) are removalble too, same as the jewel, for easy access

I have an aqua-one AR980, had it for 2 year now and think its brilliant.

The tank itself is great, the stand is fantastic quality, the filtering system is good however the powerhead on mine did break..easy to replace though.

Overall i think its great and if i needed to buy another tank then i wouldnt think twice about getting another Aquaone...

Thanks folks.

At least I've had some positive responses! I was beginning to totally despair!

The AquaOne I'm looking at is from the UFO range, the 550. I guess this is what you'd call budget or "cheap as chips" as has been said but as long as the fish are safe and cared for, I guess that's all that counts. I suppose it's the difference between living in a caravan and a 4-bedroom house - you're still in a home whichever!

Thanks again for taking the trouble to reply.

I have just bought a new tank and looked at getting an aqua one 850, it also had the trickle filter which was not sealed THIS IS BAD !!!!!!! if the filter blocks then the water will start to pour out the back of the tank and down the electrical cables, i went for an Aqua Vital 830 i swear they must be made by the exact same co as the tank itself is identical as is the stand but this doesn't have the trickle filter but an external filter !!!!!!!!, there was a £10 diff in cost as wel but not too much thankfully. i presume its because its an external filter. i have also heard that aqua one have had some troubles with the lighting units packing up, how true this is i do not know however. there are other Aqua one tanks out there that come with the external filter over the trickle filter which to seems too dangerous, all other trickle filters i have seen have been sealed as in when you lift the hood cover off u then need to lift off a separate sealed lid to access the filter media and water, this stops water leaking out if the filter gets blocked. Aqua one doesn't have this and the hoot lid access to the filter isn't sealed / water tight itself. there is also another post in the newbies section with a couple of people complaining about the vibrration noise of the trickle filter on their Aqua ones, not too sure if they are the same model however. i hope this helps a little.
