Looking to add more filtration to my rio 400 been looking at the Aqua One Aquis 2450 but then I was thinking for another £50 I could get the fx5?

As its a clown loach tank I was thinking that the UV on the aquis would be better for them?

Whatever one I get will be running along side a fluval 405.

Thanks Nettley :D

the aquis is a decent filter, ive had a few of them a few years ago but the smaller versions. i dont know if they have changed any over the last few years but mine were pretty reliable and quiet.

ive currently got 4 FX5 and cant fault them tbh. the only down side to them is that without a lot of diy involved then nothing can be fitted inline due to the width of the pipes..... it has been done though using a y piece that reduces the pipe down to a suitable thickness so inline items can be used. you will need to find some plastic pipework thats none ribbed like the original pipes and connect it to the y piece. it then acts as a splitter so 1 pipe goes straight on as normal and the other goes into the heater or uv. another y piece is then added to join the 2 together and attached to more straight pipe and into the tank.

does that make sense?

it will obviously involve extra cost on top of the initial filter purchase but its the only way to use external items like heaters and uv on the FX5.

The UV is only really a clarifier for green water, it wont be powerful enough really to act as a steralizer.

Personally... wouldnt touch a FX5 with a barge pole. Bloomin expensive, media costs a fortune, the pipes are a pain, the filter is a beast and both filter and intake and outlet are really hard to hide and from personal experience, of the 10 i have sold in the last few years, 9 were returned/replaced within a year and one of those was replaced 3 times before they just got a different filter. Motor in them is a pain in the butt and prone to faults. I found them really noisy as well.

Aqua One filters are really good. If you are considering the Aqua One filters, have you considered the AquaManta range of filters that maidenhead aquatics sell? They are the same Aqua One filters but modernised with input from the person that designed the tetratec filters. I dont know how the prices compare out but think even the biggest uv filter (AquaManta 1500U) is about < £170

EDIT: the FX5s werent all replaced in one year, it was within 1 year of purchase over 5 years lol.

I think perhaps MBOU should state where she works, so that you know there might be a hint of bias in her reply :)

sounds like you had a bad time with your FX5's....

mine have been running without any issues for well over a year. i must admit they are big machines and a measure up will be a good idea to see if the cabinet will hold it..... also new the prices have gone up silly amounts. i paid £139 brand new for all of mine and now they seem to be £240  mine are also very quiet and with the cabinet doors closed they are no noisier than other filters of this spec.

the quiestest filter ive owned was the rena xp3 which was an excelent filter :good:

Where I work doesnt make any difference to this :p

Other than that i work in the trade, hence the comment about the FX5s...

I suggested the AquaManta range of filters more because the OP was looking at big heavy duty filters with a UV in it, funnily enough, there aren't very many out there with UVs, in fact... the only ones i have ever dealt with are Aqua One filters and the AquaMantas that have UVs.

Realistically it makes no difference to me what the OP buys, its not like I get anything out of it  If i thought that P@H had an own brand external filter that fit what the OP seemed to require then i would have suggested that one.

I dont feel the need to ram products down peoples throat just because I work with them. And just because i work with products, i dont necessarily think they are all any good :fun: if a product doesnt do its job then...it doesnt do its job... no point me recommending it for a job it cant do. So I wont.

So.... Mr ZoddyZod, no jumping to conclusions :p it was just a suggestion that hadnt been mentioned yet and as they are pretty new... not many people might know about them? I'm here as a hobbiest with some potentially useful information. I'm no onesadvertising tool.

What have i started here! Lol

So the Aquamanta rath than the Aquis?

Ive been out off the FX5 now haha

Was just saying they were worth looking up! :p

The Aquamantas are taller than the Aquis i think but a lot narrower and smaller pipework, not sure if it makes much difference to you or not?

Fair play :)

Nope not at all, it was just that my LFS have the aquis in stock but i will look into the manta before jumping into buying the aquis :D

Thank you for everyone's help i appreciate it! :)

only joking MBOU! I am sure you are as impartial as I am.

Did I mention this is the best fish forum on the internet?

*nods* I shall let you off then Mr Zod....

:good:

Though you arent wrong about this being best forum!

i haven't used that exact aqua one filter but have used their smallest external its a aquis 500. I have also owned a fluval fx5 and well, i'm currently using an eheim pro 3 series instead. Not a massive fan of fx5's i don't like the impeller being at the bottom in my tank it made it very susceptible to getting clogged with sand and also it is noisy, especially when first set up or after cleaning. It used to take me around 3 or 4 attempts to get it running "silently." any way thought i would contribute, much love thank you good night.
