Sorry... I do go on a bit... But you will find that even a little bit of knowledge about these will help you in the future. I'd bet money that if this sort of thing happens again, you'll be far happier fixing it yourself... by all means ask questions, nobody is born knowing this stuff..
Like you, my primary interests are computers (esp. hardware repair and Linux).. I'm also into microcontrollers (esp. Pics) and vintage radio/electronics repair.
