hi guys,

recieved 2 apple snails today :) they look really nice, one is about 1" and the other 1.5" was wondering how big do they grow? what kind of habits do they have? what to feed them?

thanks

well unlike pest snails they won't overrun your tank with excessive breeding and apple snails are probably the most popular aquarium snail. for the aquarium you have to make sure there is air space at the top and have a tight lid incase they decide to wander. their average size is 10 cm (4") but they can vary between 5-25 cm

depends if its a cana or brigs, canas get tennis ball size, eat plants like anything, where as brigs are move like golf ball size and generally eat softer stuff, like algae, rotting veg left over fish food, algae wafers are a fav. di

i didnt realise apple snails grew that big i was looking at something to get rid of algae are these good for this then if u look at my thread (plecs?) you will see my question about algae eaters. Alyssa

nothing replaces a scraper

i dont want to have to scrape and people have said otherwise about algae eaters anyways ill let u know. Alyssa

U will always have to scrape as even the best algea eater will miss patches close to the gravel line, maybe under the gravel line, on that small area on top of the filter that only has a mm of water on top, behind the heater or pump. It will never be abble to be totally rid off

anyway on suject that is one cool snail mine is only about 1.5" still looks good though and i feed it bits of algea wafers

From my experience, apple snails do a great job of cleaning leftover food, however they will miss algae spots like mentioned above. Ramshorn snails do a better job of eating algae.

On a side note, my 1 year old daughter and you share the same name and spelling! Her name Is Alyssa too.

the reason i brought them is that i thought they were good algea cleaners? my tanks got bad algea on the bogwoods - green algea - was thinking of getting shrimps but not sure if my silver shark will disburb or try eating the shrimps? any ideas

thanks

I've never had to scrape the glass on my tank, there's not even a small amount of algae.

Get some zebra nerite snails, I have three in a 12 gallon tank. Not only have they kept it perfectly algae free for around 4 months, but they also cleared my other 12 gallon tank that had excessive algal growth!

thanks for the reply, wheres the best place to buy some zebra nerite snails from? how many will i need considering i got 2 apple snails already - ive got a 5 ft tank

They're fairly common but you may need to shop around, any large retailer should either stock them or be able to order them in :) As for how many, how big is your tank?

update:

had the apple snails for around a week now n they dont seem to be doing anything to the algae :-( really upset, i got plants in my tank n ive i got a pleco believe they will eat the plants? is it better for me to get some of the other algae eating snails that wont eat plants?
