Apistogramma Cacatuoides(Cockatoo) And Angel

i got a lucky and found a pukka bit of wood, i just need to sort out the eggcrate its sitting on to make it look more natural. i might start growing moss on the wood aswell to totally cover it. as Al pointed out, mines a male and while he does go in the cave, hes not its only inhabitant and he seems just as happy roaming the rest of the tank.

personally, im not a fan of cocunut caves or slate caves, or anything that looks un-natural. and yes, i now ive got a shelf half way up my tank made from plastic

What type of caves are you using yourself for them?
And how big the cave should be inside I wonder?

Smaller the better really the fish are like 2 inch. half a coconut is what i use and is the max size you want. The female will push all the sand from the inside to block the entrance as she dont like visitors :p

lol was funny as :good:

You find the apisto really chilled untill they take on breeding colours 1:2 ratio chances are they will pair. The females have a high chance of fighting to death. Now its only a chance depends if you want the hassle, i have about 60 cacs here but my last 2 breeding females did fight to the death. They will show no difference in behavior 1:1 or 1:2 in a tank so save the hassale and go for a nice pair :good:
it was my understanding that these fish were polygamous rather than monogamous hence why i suggested multiple females. and im really doubting that in a 4ft 90g tank 2 females would manage to do any considerable damage to one another. i also understand that during breeding they display aggression but if theyre anything at all like bolivian rams then i wouldnt be too concerned with it

though i concede i havent actually kept any apisto species myself

Thats the problem when people read things on internet mate and have no experience of them :). I have a breeding tank of them, a community tank and as far as i know im one the few that have been successful in keeping them in a large harem with a higher male ratio without any deaths :good:

He will be mixing with other ciclids and not fussed on breeding and the males are the lookers so why risk 2 females. Is all down to the fish as said before some are chilled some are headcases lol :good:

You know, when I was in the shop the last time, the attendant in the shop suggested that I get one male or one male and a female the most, not more if it is for a tank with guppies and platies. He said they should be fine in a community tank like that.
Of course, when I heard the cichilid part I just couldn't believe what he was suggesting was true, so I just want to make sure.

Only a joke, but a few eaten platies won't be a big deal. These are some boring poop machines. Guppies though..., I just have a weakness for them for years.
